PC,
It seems that there are always BA around when I am out of room. Nice selection you got. I have a few in my flock from them (last years chicks) and I am happy with them so far. None have had a single issue unlike some of the ones I got from other places. I may have to mark that calendar and see if I can make room for a few BA's in about 12 weeks.

That is by far my favorite breed of course. Be sure to post when they are ready to sell just in case I forget to mark that calendar.

@Iomine: yes, Bubbie's nose is quite seductive. Abbie will be 3 y.o. In one month; she is 28-29" tall and weighs 120-130 lbs.

@21 hens: Elvira, one of my BAs "rescued" by Abbie. She is almost recovered here, after an almost certain death. I love Black Australorps.

That is one cool dog! I am of course a fan of large dogs. My neighbor brings treats for the chickens and when he rings the doorbell he has to hold the screen door shut with both hands. My Jack is, well, a little protective of me when Dh is not home.

I really need to get the camera out and take some pics.

Elvira is looking good there. Nice of Abbie to lend her a helping paw.

Last year in search of BA's I could only get my hands on one. Bossy Betty from Feeders Supply. She was the only one they had left so I got 2 Iowa Blues with her so she would not be the lone chick entering the brooder with the motley crew. The Iowas are like small BA's but skittish.

Betty earned that name by the way.

This is the only pic I can find of Betty. Not sure what was in the water dish that had them so interested.

Abbie appreciates the compliments, especially from males, even the roosters.

Elvira had her crop ripped open when Abbie found her out in a blizzard on a 0* day. She'd been out of the coop for almost 6 hours and was near dying; she was packed in snow and ice, and I put her in a box with towels and a heating pad to thaw out. I sprayed her wound with a disinfectant, and when she woke up, I tried giving her fortified liquids with an Eye dropper. They just ran right out through her crop. She got better. For weeks she leaked liquids and food from her crop, but less every day. She never seemed to question what she was doing in the house and made herself at home - followed me everywhere, sat in my lap, on the arm of my chair, never more than a foot or two away. Of course I fed her very well, and she liked to share our home cooked meals. I grew attached, but in the spring she was starting to look pretty good again, and I asked her if she'd like to go for a walk. She followed me out the door, across the yard and through the gate to the field. When we reached the shed and coop, without a moment's hesitation, she walked over to her old coop mates, said "hi," and never looked back again. From then on, except for where her feathers stuck out from her scar, I was unable to tell her apart from her sisters. Today, whenever I think of Black Austrolorps, I think of Elvira and her mighty heart.

And I called my BAs the Bossy Assies. They got chutzpah for sure.

I'm wondering if everyone else in the state has had most of the snow melted this passed week or if it's just our area. It's been nice for the birds, but since I seem to have caught pneumonia from my lovely jerk coworker, I've been in bed since Wednesday. Only been able to watch the flocks free range for an hour each day. They all love it & I wish all our neighbors wouldn't have started lettin their dogs run wild so I wouldn't have to play flock herder.

I am fascinated by your peafowl; they don't look at all wild here. I am so sorry you caught pneumonia, especially from your nasty nemesis. Hope you are better soon.
In lieu of the snow, I have mud. Yesterday, while leaning forward into a walk up a small incline, my feet shot out from behind me, and I smacked face down, faster than gravity - spread-eagled - into a goopy pile of mud and chicken pxxxx. Changed clothes, took a shower, and thought that was the end of it. Today, however, I can hardly move, I am so stiff and sore, can hardly budge from my iPad. My birds are all free ranging again, rearranging themselves into their preferred groups regardless of my plans for them. Sometimes they are the pits. Having bbq'd steaks today. Halles and thanks to St. Valentine!

They are very much wild & not pets. I hope I can hatch a few eggs in a year or two to see if hand raising them makes a difference like the literature says it will. Yeah, I ended up having walking pneumonia, bronchitis, sinus infection & the start of ear infections in both ears! Yahtzee! I guess you can't expect someone to care that your immune system is compromised if they let themselves get sick enough to be in hospital for a week & bring everyone they work with into contact with it, you know? Still pretty irritated since I've missed a week and a half of classes because I've been so sick. We have so much mud, too! I'll take it over the snow & ice, though. It's been nice to watch the birds wander & explore.

I hope you're feeling better after your fall! It sucks when gravity turns on you like that. :)
