@Iomine: oooh, nice ducks and pup. I was just up at Jax in Loveland, looking at their new arrivals: silver hamburgs (a number of these looked weak and moribund, compared to the rest which seemed lively and ready to go), buff orpingtons, black and red sex links, speckled Sussex, mottled javas, RIRs, California Whites, and "ameraucanas." There were also a number of dark Rouens and khaki Campbell ducks. I was so tempted.

Gosh, it looks like you got a lot snow.

I share the mud dilemma, has been awhile since I could see out my sliding back door.

I have a little cutie, too. And a big one.

This is my puppy, Abbie, when I brought her home at 3 mos. old. 'Twas the first and last time I ever picked her up.

Thanks for the heads up about the chicks at Jax........ that is where I have to go get feed tomorrow. I better take a "support" person to make sure I come home without more chicks.

Actually it is hubbies orders that during chick season I CANNOT go alone.

Too bad you can't take my neighbor with you; he hates chickens, doesn't like feathers in his yard, shoots the Mourning Doves. Too bad, too, you have to go right past the chicks and ducklings to get to the chicken feed. There are so MANY, you just know they're soon gonna' be crowded and will need some help. Good luck.

Yeah, the dogs are a little spoiled, but they don't seem to mind.

Taking hubby with does not work well since he likes the little chickens too. He SAYS he will keep me out of trouble but then tells me to get some chicks.

He is the one that chose most of the chicken breeds we have now and he has a weird thing against odd numbers....... I have 29 chickens right now. Thinking I will have to just go alone and hope for the best.

The little silver hamburgs are a little more frail in my experience. I got some there years ago and lost one within 2 days.

Ohhhh, I get it. A little bit of a co-dependent projection. Cool. Well, if I could have only one and had to choose, I would choose one of the sex links, in order to ensure that I got a pullet. But then you would have to get at least one more to keep her company, and then you'd have an odd number again. So at the very least, you'd have to get three. The BSL I purchased to keep a lone chick company turned out to be one of my favorites. She did not mix well with any of the other birds, though, and was picked on by the roosters. She doesn't seem to lay that much better, either. She did single me out as her personal property and savior, and she likes to hop on my arm, or my shoulder, or my back, or my head (I always wear a hat out at her coop), and she is the most human oriented bird I have. She does NOT pick on other birds and she sleeps with the hens of her own color. The older Eastereggers I thought looked nice.

Some of the feed was getting low yesterday. You're probably out there right now. I watched the chicks for quite some while, trying to get a feel for their temperament and vigor. Doesn't really hurt to look. Thought about California Whites. Happy shopping!

I did it! I made it in and out of Jax without any additions (or multiplications)!

I had forgotten how very tiny the hamburgs are when chicks. So very cute.

The California whites that I have had were awesome layers. They are a lot like the regular white leghorn but not so skittish. Pepper is my only remaining one. She still lays a jumbo egg 4 times a week at 6 years old now. She is also the queen of the mean end of the coop. Salty was on the bottom of the pecking order sadly. She was one of my favorites for sure even though she was super skittish.

They have Ancona chicks too. Such cute little spotted things. The ducklings are there too. Little and flappy footed little monsters. Very hard to resist coming home with a few of them.

I am good for 2 weeks on feed and shavings.

Hey one battle at a time lol. In two weeks I will have to stand strong and perhaps wear ear plugs so I cannot hear their little voices saying over and over "take me with you" and "I am so tiny and cute".

What breeds did you end up getting PC?

Cute dogs @coop410silkies Look at Bubba's little black nose, so adorable. Abbie was one big puppy. But that face!

Way to stay strong @21hens-incharge !
