Colorado

Hi Colorado chicken people,

I am moving to a new house in the same neighborhood, and I'd like to take my chicken coop with me. Problem is, it wasn't built with moving in mind, and we don't have an alley. So it's either a crane, or taking it apart and rebuilding at the new house.

Can anyone recommend a builder who might be able to do this in Denver? I know there are some shady folks on Craigslist, want to find someone reputable. Thanks!

Hey, I'm glad I found a Colorado thread! Woohoo! I live in Colorado Springs and about two weeks ago I decided to get two polish. I am worried one or both might turn out to be Roos. If anyone is interested in a polish Roo, let me know.

This little bugger is Ree, the one is suspect might be a Roo.

Pom Pom, I think this one is a pullet.

@lomine I'm an art snob/metal/goth from my teenage years and the idea of having all black birds appealed to those parts of me.

In all seriousness, they just looked neat and that's pretty much the basis for my entire flock - what looks neat. I don't keep them for their egg/meat production, they're definitely pets instead of livestock for me.

Speaking of my hatch, I think I've encountered my first case of bloodring:

This is the egg from my Polish/Sebright mix again and it's on Day 11. I'm waiting until at least Day 14 to be sure because it kind of looks like the examples on the boards here but kind of doesn't (the "ring" isn't a complete ring) and the mass in the center is still moving.

I have 3 Ayam Cemani and 1 Black Phoenix Bantam eggs in lockdown starting tomorrow, then the mystery egg and this one (if it's not already dead) go into lockdown next week, then Mercury and Memnoch's egg goes into lockdown the following week. I hope I wasn't overly ambitious in my staggering. I just couldn't pass up the chance to try hatching an M&M egg when I found out Mercury was laying again.

@ColoBecky Welcome! Wish I could help with your coop moving but I have no suggestions. I know that sometimes when people move Tough Sheds they put them on logs and roll them,but that doesn't help you get it out of the backyard. Even if you took down one of your fence panels your coop looks too wide to fit. Good luck though. Hope you find someone who can help.

@madileana Welcome fellow Colorado Springs resident! I think Polish are neat birds but don't think I'll ever have one. There are so many breeds I want but with limits on numbers in the city I have to pick my favorites. Are the Polish your only chickens or do you have others?

@uzisuzuki I totally understand picking breeds by looks. For my first flock of chickens I picked my breeds based on looks and egg color. I'm hoping to get a fun colorful egg basket. I should get some on the 22nd but I'm not sure when the Blue Ameraucanas will come in. I might have to wait till May.

Please share pictures when your chicks hatch!

@lomine
I started last year with two RIR's, one Salmon Faverole, two bantam EE's, one Barred Rock and a speckled Sussex. Then a racoon happened and left me with one RIR and the Barred Rock.

So, this spring I wanted to restore the flock. I got two EE's and two Polish. We also installed a large dog kennel around our coop so they are better protected. The Racoon broke in through the nest box, which was taken off and replaced with plywood.

Big Red and Blackstar. After the racoon got my other girls, I brought this home:

He grew into the rooster!

He stays with the girls from the moment they wake and herds them into the coop for bed.

Greetings @madileana ! Welcome to BYC and the Colorado thread. nice looking pup. sorry about the coon losses. never much got into the smaller birds, but some of them are very "showy"...

@Latestarter
I wasn't on a quest for bantams and I didn't get any this year, but I was dead set on getting EE's last year. Last year, everytime EE pullets came to our feed stores they were sold out. I ended up getting them from the pet store in the Citidel Mall for $25 bucks a pop! They just so happened to be bantams. I was very unhappy about the loss.

I won't get bantams again, but only because I like the bigger birds and bigger eggs. I got two EE chicks from Buckleys and they are not as pretty as my last ones, but I love them.

I agree with Percheron chick. The first one looks like a cream brabanter. They are pretty birds.

Thanks for the heads up on the rain as there are a ton of chores waiting on me. Just wishing I had a day off before the weekend. I have half a pick up load of compost to wheel to the back yard since I need the truck for other things this weekend. Mother Nature always messing with the plans lol.

madileana, Glad that handsome pup is good with the gals. Bummer bout the coons getting the birds. I put hasp latches on the coops here and keep a padlock on them to keep the nasty critters out. (This includes someone stealing eggs from our yard the last couple years.) Humans have been my greatest threat but we have coons here in Loveland too.

COChix, They are growing like weeds! Looking quite happy too.

Uzi, You have a lot going on! I do not know how you keep it all straight. I would be a mess trying to remember when I started which egg. I hope they all hatch for you.

I know I am missing responding to several posts. Been busy around here too.
The ladies made a mess out of the back yard last fall and I did not get it fixed all up yet. Please forgive the mess in the pic as well..... life happens here a lot.
I had to share one of the new garden beds.

I am rather tired of mowing so am going all gardens in the back yard. (I know I know..... the yard is a mess.) The mulch path was decimated by the chickens last fall and I never got round to fixing it as I plan to do a stone path there when we do the stone patio. Lots to do but progress being made.
