Colorado

Opened the kennel today so the chicks could run around their brooder set up. Checked a couple of times and a few had escaped into the run with the adult flock. Didn't have any issues, but closed the gaps to be safe. They are a week old today....got some cute pictures today of preening....

turned their heat pad down to 5 as it was reading 91 overnight on 6. So with that adjustment it is now around 80 overnight. Since getting moved they are showing more feathering and seeing tail feather now on all three.

They're really pretty little chicks @COChix . Hope everyone's enjoying the warmth, even though it is a little cloudy. Guess I better get off my butt and go check for eggs. Better check on my two roo enclosure as well... Went out to feed them this morning and heard a commotion and went in to see them trying to kill each other. Broke up the fight... hope they took the lesson. Have a Colorado type weekend all!

So I have one hen that has been determined to get into the brooder enclosure everyday since the chicks got moved outside. I often find her in the area, I am now leaving their dog kennel door open so they can run around their brooder set up. I have put this bird in with the chicks a couple times to see what she does. I am trying to assess her desire to be a mom or if she is just curious about their food and water. The first time I let her in she was going for food and water, so I pulled it. She didn't do much, didn't call the chicks to her either. They stayed clear that first time. The second time I let her in and didn't pull the food and water. Of course she ate and drank, but the chicks came up to her. They all just stared at each other. Yesterday, she got in, so I observed for a bit. She ate and drank, let the little chicks pick some food off her beak. She did try pecking at one on the head, twice while she was scratching around in their brooder, they ran up to see what the commotion was and she bopped them on the head. I have not let her stay in. I have never had a broody and given her chicks, only let a broody hatch. Can someone with more experience give me some tips on what I should be looking for to see if she might be a surrogate?

Here was one thought, she doesn't seem overly mothering to them, meaning, she isn't calling them or doing the pecking at food and calling them. So I am leaning more towards she is just being mishevious and wants their food.

COChix, love those little wings. So cute!

Uzi, good luck with your hatch. Those are those all black chickens, right. The roosters are so cool looking. What made you choose that breed?

My quail chicks are doing well. One died the second day but everyone else is thriving. They are starting to feather out already. And they do like to jump around. What I didn't expect was for them to sound like a bunch of crickets. It's so funny when a bunch of them get going.

Heads up, just in case my friends ....!!!!!

According to meteorologist Cory Reppenhagen,
"total precipitation for Colorado's next winter storm
Friday thru Sunday. Showing 5 inches of water for the
weekend. This is from the European computer model,
which has been the most accurate and reliable models for
us all winter. The American global model, which has been
terrible, shows not even a fraction of this moisture. What
makes this even crazier, is that the Euro has this moisture
in the form of snow.... yes SNOW. That would mean nearly
40 inches of wet spring snow, or if it is colder and drier,
nearly 50 inches of 10 to 1 powder snow.

Here are some close up of my peepers. Also adding in a Silver Lace Wyandotte (Lacey) and a Barred Rock (Lucy). They get to go out and peck around the coop in the afternoon after the ladies are done laying if its a warm afternoon. Can't wait to get those 2 outside permanently and out of the basement.

just wow... Been a few years since we've had one of these. Guess I better get outside chores done before the weekend. If this happens, might be a while before I get another chance.
