We got to go outside today!!!!!

Eventually worms were uncovered, and chases were run...all sorts of mad scampers ensued as the girls discovered leaf litter, twigs, and old feathers. The feathers created great races each time one was found. Chicks running about flapping young growing wings and scampering after the bird with the feather.

So cute when they get out and about.

Picture warning....sorry but these guys are too cute!

I think this is about my favorite age with chicks. They are so tentative but soooo curious that it doesn't take them long to decide to venture about...

I have a sneaking suspicion that the grey chic on the right is a male, based on the wings, two feathers and beak. That is an OE I think I see the beginning of the comb, we will see. It has slate colored legs....

These smarties decided to roost their first day in the run and seeing roosts.

@COChix they are growing so fast. So cute.

I am officially a chicken owner as of today. When to Kiowa Country Corner to pick up my chicks. Three Blue Ameraucanas, a Blue Laced Red Wyandotte, a Barneveler, and an EE. They didn't have the Partridge Wyandotte like I wanted so I got the EE instead. I wasn't going to make another 2 hour round trip for just one chick. The Blue Ameraucanas are straight run so I am really hoping I get at least one hen. I'm not allowed to have roosters but I'll deal with that when the time comes.

Nbr 4 still has a fairly large crop for his body, but he started doing sprint jumps with the other three (& he pooped in my bed) so I'm hoping that all is a good sign for his general health. He eats like a horse, so I'm not surprised now that his crop got so big. It just looked wrong last night since he's not shaped like the other chicks. The other three don't treat him any different, so I'm thankful for that.

I've got mystery egg that I'm hoping will hatch this weekend & the Mercury's egg early next week. The second egg that was supposed to hatch this weekend died some days ago.

I had a devistating development yesterday.  My good as gold chicken protector dog got caught with a pullet in his mouth.  I did a quick head count and 6 pullets are missing.  I'm sure this is fallout from the new puppy and I've got some work ahead of me.  Levi had been raised with geese and I'm sure he got his butt beat by a mean gander that left an impression on him.  He's never thought of even chasing them before.  Couldn't even make eye contact with them.  If anyone has a mean old gander they want to rehome or offer up for some training at your place shoot me a line.  Also if you've brought a dog back from the dark side give me some tips.   Thanks.

I would march right out to Bass Pro and get a good training collar and watch the dog like a hawk. Every time it went for a chicken, I would give him a "pinch" so he knew that was a bad idea. Then I would do a beep and "pinch" on the next attempt. Finally I would go to a beep and vibration. A good training collar will cure that dog and it's human for both him and the pullets.
