Hello Colorado
frow.gif
! I'm new to the BYC boards, to chicken-raising, and a long-time homeschooling mom with 2 children still at it. We live near Fountain, CO (btwn CS and Pueblo). We have 4 chicks we picked up at the local Big R a week ago and have 7 more coming from MyPetChicken next week.

Our coop/run/greenhouse is getting built slowly but surely and I am wondering if it's common to insulate the hen house portion considering Colorado's winter weather?

Thanks,
Regina

Welcome! Good luck with the coop build! Sounds like you've gotten some sound advice from what I know.

Ok so we moved our three young cockerels to Boulder. The grey one's crow is very distinctly a rooster. The other two sound like ducks, no Bueno in the city.

We are trying to sell or process them....Here are some shots...

So I split the enclosed run gave them a 1/3. Used zip ties, poultry netting and landscape stakes. Was fairly easy, this ain't my first rodeo :D. They get the small batechlor/broody/hospital coop and part of the run. Rocco was fairly aggressive upon seeing them. Charged the run, let out a blog curling dinasour sound with his hackles up. The hens ran...things calmed down fairly quickly, once Rocco saw they were no threat.

Hello everyone! New front ranger here. Moved from the mountains. Went to hoa meeting Thursday. Zero allowed by covenants however the town allows 6 hens. :) I need 50 signatures from the homeowners in my subdiv by July's meeting as step one of basically a wild goose chase the hoa wants me to do. Any luck with changing covenants anyone? So for now Im looking at a year before we can get chicks. Maybe next spring? We are near Firestone, Dacono, Frederick.

Well hello and welcome maarijke!

I do not know the answer to the question sadly. I know in the end it is likely up to the HOA and then if anyone complains at all the chickens have to go. Make sure when you are allowed to get them that you get pullets. That means yes skipping the cute chick stage in order to be guaranteed to be getting hens. That or get chicks from a place that guarantees they will take back any roosters you end up with if the ones you got from them were sexed wrong.

Just to prepare you for the potential battle........
Get hens that are likely to be quieter. My Hamburgs for example rip me from a sound sleep over the noise of the fan in the window at exactly 20 minutes before the sun comes up. My Black Australorp however are quite content to hang out in the coop until up to 30 minutes after the sun is up. They are much quieter throughout the day as well.

The second thing people will claim is that chickens smell. They do NOT if they are kept clean. With a limit of 6 that should be easy enough to do. I would also plan to plant some fragrant flowers along any adjoining fence so if someone is "trying" to smell them they get either a face full of bees or the scent of flowers.

Plan on being limited in space as a lot of the HOA's that have allowed hens also limit the structure and run quite a bit.

I really hope you are able to get the resolution you desire. Remember that there are a great lot of us here that are rooting for you and always happy to impart any knowledge we have as well as welcoming any you have.

Best wishes,
Barbara

Welcome to the Colorado thread, great to have you on board.

Keep us posted as to your experiences with your HOA.

By the way, you are right in my backyard...so to speak. AND...if you like authentic Italian cooking, try Pete's Place, I think it also goes by Pappa Frank's. Until the road construction in your area is completed, they are doing all you can eat spaghetti. We had dinner there Thursday evening, I just love their cooking.
