Colorado

@luckied
Oh no! Yep, defiantly not going to get dark eggs from that bird. Are you going to keep him? If you got a blue egg laying hen you could breed some OEs.

@Percheron chick
Those are cool looking eggs. I wouldn't mind a couple that looked like that in my egg basket.

Yes we did decide to keep him as so far he seems to really care about his girls. I always said no roosters, but watching him grow, and boy he got big, I of course have an attachment to him. He let out his first crow a week or so ago, it it cracks me up. It's like a little kid that wants your attention, because sometimes when he sees me outside he just continues on for about 30 minutes....
No blue egg layers, but I do intend intend to get a few this spring along with a few more marans, hopefully pullets this time!

Here he is with my white rock, who is actually 1 of my largest girls and he just dwarfs her when they are together. However she's still boss, and he is afraid of her....
I guess I had never thought of it as I never planned on having any roos, but I'm curious where do they fit in in the pecking order?
I know they all listen to him when he let's out a warning crow, but I'm curious do they usually dominate the whole flock, or is it different all the time?

I know what you mean. I got my AMs as straight run so I knew my changes of getting a cockerel were high and I thought I was prepared to deal with it. But my boy is so handsome and well behaved I couldn't get rid of him. It would have been easy had he been aggressive. I'm actually planning on moving to a place where I can legally keep him. For now I'm just hoping no one rats me out.

From what I have read, the pecking order normally goes rooster, hen, cockerel, and then pullets. Each sub group can also have it's own pecking order. I'm guessing that it can be more complicated then that though. I don't know if it is 'normal' for a hen to be dominate. Though I would guess that it is normal for an older hen to put a young cockerel in his place from time to time.

FINALLY my girls started laying! They are almost seven months old and two of them started this week. My EE is at one per day for three days and my Australorp laid her first today. One (a BO) to go!

So we lost a young roo to a predator, found only the head and wing outside the chicken pens yesterday am. It was the grey roo, he escaped the run enclosure as best we can tell. There is no sign of forced entry into the run and all the hardware is still entact. Kinda sad to see him go....

That is such a bummer COChix. I am sad for you that he met such an end. Do you have any idea how he got out?
I know they can be quick darting out and not get seen. One of my hens tries it every day. I know you are careful with yours and that while he was with you he was well cared for.

Happy New Year Colorado!
Cochix, sorry for your loss.

I had a predator get 5 of my birds. It was 100% my fault too. I hadn't been closing the coop up at night. I thought nothing could get in with our fence and three dogs. Well, I was wrong and my poor chickens paid the price.

I had just processed my old birds before the predator attack, and then I lost 5 more. I only have 7 layers now and 7 bantams. The 7 layers are 3 of this years pullets not laying yet, hopefully any day they will start, and 4 of last years bird and they are just finishing molting. So, no eggs here.

I already ordered chicks to arrive the first week of February.

Hope 2017 is happy and prosperous and healthy for everyone.
