Hi & TY. Well the prob is with mites. First time in the 3-1/2 years we've had chickens. After much research though, I'm sure the problem will be taken care of. There were many opinions on what one can use. I am going with Prozap Garden & Poultry Dust. Going to pick it up shortly. Thanks for asking!

@stain2319 sorry to hear about your cockerel. I had a neighbor complain about mine. Luckily I was already in the middle of moving and he got a stay of execution. Now that I'm in the country he can crow as much as he likes. His two sons have started crowing now too but one of them will be invited to dinner so we'll se how much the other crows when it's just him.

Welcome to the Colorado thread @MzAutumn. Glad it worked out with your rooster. I love having my boy around. He's such a good boy. Please share some pictures. We all love to see them.

@orfan40 Congrats on your first egg. It never really gets old finding eggs.

That's Big Bird or aka BB in my profile pic. He was part of our 1st straight run bought at Big R, so quite a surprise. His big green feet started giving him away at an early age. lol Very sweet, & very tamed. We had a 2nd roo which was hatched by one of our RI Reds. We had and still have no intention of breeding chicks. This was quite accidentally. We named him #1. He's now got a flock of his own at my sons in Weldona. Two of them crowing was just too much for even me! I'm sharing a pic of #1 here.

We're in Greeley and got our first chickens in February. They have just given us our first egg yesterday and one today. We have four, a RI Red, a NH Red, a Barred Rock and an Americauna. We're thinking the Barred Rock laid the first eggs. It's sooo exciting and yes we too have no life and love to sit in the backyard and watch our chickens. Life is GOOD!

Hello all. A weird week for the chickens....
Had 1 day where a little puller go into the coop a poke holes in ALL the eggs! Luckily never happened again...
Then another day I heard crowing coming from the hen house and all my Roos were outside. So after about 20 minutes of sitting in there I finally saw my little Sultan stand straight up and crow.. 5 months everyone said it was a pullet, but read they are super hard to sex until they mature, I guess they were right. I'm now looking to rehome, so if anyone is interested let me know. 5 month old Sultan cockerel, docile and prefers confinement.
And late yesterday afternoon I saw my speckled Sussex hen go into a nesting box and I thought it was late but all my birds lay at different times so I didn't think much of it, well guess who stayed in the box all day today? I have no idea how many eggs are under her but I'm thinking about 10. I'm trying to decide if I should look or not.?. Does anyone have any advice on why I should check? I'm kinda a "let nature take course gal" and almost want to be surprised by what hatches. I already placed food and water in the box (she picked a large box) is there anything else I should do? This is the 1st hen I've had go broody.

I would get a crayon or marker, mark the eggs that you are leaving in there. The other hens will try to lay more eggs and it can become mayhem if that is the favorite box. You may want to wall her off so they won't pester her. (I recommend this.) The eggs can get broken and then it can affect the development of the other eggs. If she continues after a few days, she will probably see it to the end. Good Luck!

Well it's probably a good thing because I was just woken up by a bear trying to get into my coop. We managed to scare him off.

I'm working on it. There is a bear management organization here in Durango that will give us a $100 voucher towards electric fencing setup. We also want to try non-lethal rubber bullets to deter more aggressive bears. Last nights visitor was a small young black bear.
