Colorado

Hey all!

I'm in Denver (Mayfair neighborhood) and I have a full house! 3 hens (Rosie, Charlotte and Raven), 2 ducks (Mango and Buster) and 3 rabbits. And of course, two house cats and a couple goldfish in my pond. Crazy? Probably! I didn't realize how much I love animals and especially fowl. They are so hilarious! Nice to see all the Colorado peeps on here!

Welcome @JJtonar to the CO thread and :welcome. What breeds do you have? Got any pictures to share?

I'm bummed today. Not only did I lose another of the chicks (disappeared) but now I have to cull the Am cockerel I was planning on keeping. I was checking leg bands last night to make sure they weren't too tight. His was a bit tight so I changed it. While doing so I decided to give him a good once over. Turns out he has a funky bottom beak so I can't use him for breeding. :( :he

On a different note I've decided to reduce my flock. I have way too many eggs and these birds are eating a lot. I want to scale it down before winter. I'm going to try to sell some pullets and hens, along with the Cayuga ducks and two pairs of the ducklings. I thought I'd try selling the extra males with one female of the same breed before butcher day. I think I want to try selling at the Critter Swap at the Falcon Big R. Has anyone tried to do anything like that before? I'm just wondering what it's like and if it will be very easy to sell the birds. Has anyone sold birds on CL?

I sold some extra chicks on Craigslist.. we met at the Big R for the exchange. No problems there, other than the usual interested but don’t get back to you people. Sold all four within two weeks.

I have two Blue Laced Red Wyandottes with single combs I need to get rid of as well, and was thinking about taking them to the next critter swap. I haven’t sold anything there yet but I did pick up a pair of bantams a few weeks back.

I've sold/rehomed all sorts of chickens thru craigslist. Met some really nice people too. I've been to the Denver dog swap, which is small, and the Whardle's swap too, which is bigger.
lomine- What type/ color Am's do you raise? I have black LF. There was a cl posting for rehoming paul smith line cockerels recently.

I have Blue Ameraucana. I've had a lot of trouble hatching their eggs. So far it looks like the only keeper is a Splash pullet. Most of what I hatch are EEs. I'm trying to get fun looking EEs with green or olive eggs. I just saw an ad on CL for Lavender Am cockerels. It's tempting but it looks like most chicks would be black or blue. With my Blue rooster I get mostly blue. I like color verity, that's why I got some Crested Cream Legbars. Hoping that will add a little color.

What were the swaps like? Were you able to sell very well?

my daughter has a breeding project of Belgian d'Anvers, so I'm always unloading the cockerels free/$5.00 and I always manage to get rid of them. Sold several young Am last spring and they went quick. We did a flock reduction last fall and sold them for between 10-20. The $10 girls were molting pretty bad at the time, so our timing wasn't great. Show up early. My problem is I'm always tempted by the pretty birds available. Saw a pair of Chuckers for the first time and wanted them pretty badly....
Had a batch of AM Cockerals last spring and I was surprised at the level of interest. Probably got cooked, but at least I wasn't feeding them anymore. Had one guy take 3 at once for $10 a piece. I like Whardle's better because it's bigger. Wish I could go to the others, but they are far and I'd probably buy more than I sell.:barnie

OMG if you have any d’anvers, male or female, in the future, I would very much love to buy some from you.

Uzisuzuki, you are an addict. I've managed to hatch 4 this year, pretty sure one of the two old chicks is male. They are only 4 weeks old and 3 weeks old, so have a bit of growing yet to do. Our winter, although mild, lasted until June, so our hen didn't lay until almost July. Have two hens, but one decided to go hermaphroditic on me this season. Very strange. Anyway, I'll let you know first if I have something. The hens are the sweetest little things ever. By the way, we have the quail variety.

Thank you! I have been looking for someone in state to get more from because I absolutely love my little hen, Sparta. I was able to hatch a single egg from her, but the pullet died earlier this year and it just killed me. That breed is probably my fav in personality so far.

I was at the Falcon Big R today picking up food. They gave me this sign for free because I bought Purina brand. They had two other styles to pick from.
