Two words...."Miller Moths"....:lau

Oh man, the moths were terrible this year. One moth in the house is fine, but TWENTY flying around the bed at night is gross. Our girls came of age right around the time they got really bad. We caught as many as we could from the walls and ceiling and put them in the brooder. The girls learned to hunt early in life! Around our house moths are known as "chicken dinners" now.

My little SLW is the most patient when it comes to bugs. When they are outside the flies like to fly in and out of there pen, I swear to tease them, the other two get really flustered and flap around the pen after a while but she will calmly just pluck them out of the air.

We went through a spell of about 3 weeks where there were quite a few moths.

I'd swat them at night as they fluttered about, and collect them in a plastic cup. Then I'd dump them out the next day for the pullets. At first the pullets weren't quite sure what they were...but after a few days of this, they would be gathered at the bottom of the stairs waiting for their daily ration of miller moths.

Now they go nuts when ever they kick one up in the yard.

Hmm. I'm not sure how it works either. I'm in Parker but on the Elbert County side, so it's a little different. No HOA, and I have 5 acres zoned for residential agriculture so I think I can have a maximum of 15 poultry and/or fowl, roos included.

It's a hot one out there today! I'm running myself ragged checking on the girls in their coop. Maybe not the best for their first full day outside to be a 99 degree day, but they need to be outside. I'm just about out of brooders big enough for them and can't handle the indoor mess anymore. Grateful that I have a few vacation days this week so I can be home to check in on them! Stay cool, everyone.

Found out that Douglas County approved up to 4 hens in addition to other pets on property smaller than 2.3 acres. Yay!!!!

Oh yea, sorry I missed your post or I would have told you. I think they passed that this year, made me happy being in one of those houses with almost no yard.

Cool about Douglas county!

The boys found some crickets in the basement yesterday........

They threw them into the pen and the chicks went nuts! The Jake got one and swallowed it whole, while the chickens, in a demonstration of limited mental capacity, got the others in their mouths, then proceed to run around the pens chirping loudly while all the others chase them for their share. Way entertaining. The turkeys, no chirping for them: spot, peck, swallow. What the chicks don't know...seems to be their attitude.
