Colorado

I went out at dusk last night and soaked the ground under the coops. Keeps them cooler during the day. The extra shade I put up earlier in the week has really helped as well. They like sitting in the shade on damp ground.

Joe

What kind of Dorkings are you getting?

I was just reading other posts about weasels attacking hens at night. Do we have weasels on the Front Range? I'm in Southeast Boulder.

re:the heat. My kids at school bought me Chickens Magizine for my birthday.Quoting the mag... "adding apple cider vinegar to the water at a ratio of 1 tablespoon to 1-4 gallons of wateronce or twice a week...known to act as a natural coccidiostat, helps birds cope with hot and cold weather by boosting metabolism(American Livestock Breeds Conservancy)"

Take that forwhat you will. Might be worth a bit of reasearch. But what do I know....I don't even have chickens yet ; )

Weasels: There are Weasels in Colorado, but as to whether or not they are in your particular area, I don't know. We don't have them here at our house, but we do have little ground squirrels, prairie dogs (fewer now that before, and none on the property), red fox, badger (1/2 mile away), and coyotes.

Vinegar: I add it to my chicks water every other week. Works for various maladies. To young chicks' water, also add a little molasses. Helps get rid of pasty butt. Just my observations, other people's results may vary.
