Colorado

I am in Firestone, up north just east of Longmont. We can not have chickens...yet! I have been after the city to approve them but they are being stupid. I do have "button" quail, just one pair but that is enough for now, they are inside in a cage.
I would love to get 3 chickens for the eggs and just because they are fun to watch. Maybe someday soon!

I am sorry to hear the Firestone will not allow poultry...I thought that back in the 70's they did allow poultry. They must have changed their ordinances with all the in the mid-90's.

I hope that you are successfull in getting this changed.

I haven't seen any signs yet, they are getting a little red faced. BUT, someone has dropped 2 very small eggs (smaller than any of my other birds first eggs) outside in the run over the last 3 days. Still trying to pin it down, but my suspicions would be the second Wellie. Was in the same spot both times. Just not sure cuz the first Wellie didn't lay anything that small. All the birds hang around in that area.

Sharon and Mayah:

Any indication from your Dom pullets that they will be laying soon? I have a couple of the hatchery Doms that have nice red combs and wattles, and are "thickening". I'm thinking within a few weeks!

#31 has redder waddes/comb than #49. But they are starting to get a little redder. I also watched 49 go into the nesting area yesterday. I suspect in the next 3 or 4 weeks.Yay!

Awesome! Thanks Sharon and Mayah! It's funny, but the hatchery pullets are showing signs and my show line pullets aren't. They have all been in and out of the nest boxes for the last week or two. We have one or two wooden eggs in each nest.

So before I posted last I had gone out to check for eggs, trying to get another dozen for the firehouse, and still needed a couple. I did the posting, then went out again, and dang if there wasn't an egg on the ground. I went out at 3, no eggs. just went out at 5:30 and there's ANOTHER egg on the ground in the same general location. I think I need to revisit my nest box setup. Got several girls laying on only 1 side of a double sized nest box, and no one even visiting the upper nest box. Think I'll take down the top nest box and put it alongside the first. I put a perch in front of the top one, but maybe it just too much trouble for them.

ETA: Both eggs were speckled, so I'm thinking definitely Wellies. Do they lay smaller eggs?

I don't get it. I have 3 gals in one 4x6 coop, 6 nest boxes, and what do I find??? Two hens battling over 1 nest box!! Sunny literally shoved herself under Scrambles to force her out! Seriously? There were 5 other options!
