Where did you get the Denagard?
Melting Pot IS romantic we went their for our 15th anniversary... but it IS expensive and we had to stop and get my husband a burger on the way home... the little pieces of meat and fruit shared between us wasn't anywhere near enough for him

Wendell - great news that Beth is out of critical care... we are sending our prayers out to you both... Also, thanks for the info on drafts versus ventilation. I am working on a plan (less drafts more ventilation)...

I have a chick (easter egger - 11 weeks)... her eye/head swelled up last week. I bought some denegaurd like you guys recommended and she looks much better (the other eye is back to normal, her comb is not red and swollen); however, she still can't see out of her "bad" eye... it is still so swollen to the front of her eye that the eyelid is stretched to cover it and covers her actual eye... This is day 4 on the denegaurd. Beyond not being able to see out of her eye she runs around with the other little ones, eats and drinks well. She squacks when the bigs ones are around as she probably can't keep track of them with just one eye. RECOMMENDATIONS? Another vet visit or do the denegaurd for another few days?

Thanks... Tracie

How eggciting, Wendell!

It still cracks me up too, Pozees...if only I'd known, I'd have taken the vid cam with me...it was just a scream! They rewarded me with 6 beautiful, big eggs today...one from each girl...wasn't that nice of them?? ;)

We've been incredibly busy around here! Building a new chicken coop, harvesting from the garden, and dealing with 5 million chickens (seems like it anyway).

The new chicken coop felt like a disaster from start to finish. We had to dig out a TON of dirt to level the darn thing. Then the floor boards were warped so we had to peice them together in the least offensive way and replace a few. And that's all we got done on the first day. The next day, my husband was going to build all the walls and finish the floor but the compressor stopped working and the nail gun jammed. A couple days later, with his dad's air compressor and a day taken off from work, we worked on the walls. The warped wood didn't give us many problems putting the walls together. We did however start having problems getting the walls to fit together. Oh boy! Thankfully, we're not complete noob's when it comes to building so we were able to fix the problem. Right before we were going to put up the last wall, the wind and rain started. So we stabilized the walls that were up and made a mad dash to get everything put away or covered. Several days later we got my father in law over here to help with the last wall and roof. The roof was the one thing I am not capable of doing since I'm short and wimpy. So, nearly a week and a half later we are done building the kit shed, now we begin turning it into a coop. I found 8 small matching used windows that are perfect for the coop, so we'll need to put those in. We're going to add a bit more framing for stability and places to hang the nest boxes and roosts and the pop door. We're going to add another layer of flooring because the one we put in turned out a bit flimsier than we want. Then we paint! I cant wait to have a chicken coop that looks good. After that we have to fence in a run. Then we have to put up some fencing along one side of the yard to keep them from going into a busy road when they're free ranging. Maybe then we will have a coop warming party since we never had a house warming party. :) Lesson learned, don't buy anymore shed kits. The wood sucks.

Today, I walked by my latest broody in the garage and 2 days ahead of schedule, there was a baby silkie peeping out from under her. Yay!

So I will leave you with an adorable picture:

Look close and you'll see the baby.

Has anyone fed cat food to their chickens before? The vet said our latest trip in was caused by our sensitive stomach dry food. They diagnosed General with Irratable bowel syndrome. When we were first 'prescribed' food we had just bought a 30lb bag of their old stuff. So we started mixing to get rid of the old. Well, the General somehow got too much of the old stuff yesterday and started vomiting blood. Yay. So, one vet visit later and the culprit IDed, we are doing a total swap over. Will the ladies actually eat it or snub it? It's a mix of purina's HA and royal canine sensitive stomach.
Chick - Yes the chickens will eat the cat food just fine. Once in a while I just throw some to my chickens. They eat it right up.
