Well we did end up going to the harvest festival/wine tasting down at Holy Cross Winery, but it was so crowded and stinkin' hot we only stayed about an hour. We were going to buy a couple bottles of merlot but the line for the register was literally out the door so we were too. Took the long winding drive up Phantom Canyon and through Cripple Creek to look at the leaves. It was a popular activity, very busy road, but a good chance to put our new Subaru through its paces on the gravel. The leaves were gorgeous and if anyone has some spare time I highly recommend going up this weekend!
I have a chicken question too. For the past few days our BR and welsummer have been waking up extremely early to make a racket, around 5-5:30AM, before it even starts getting light out. I thought at first that it was the light of the full moon tricking them, but they did it again this morning when it was clouded over. It's not that it's early for me at that time (though IT IS) but we have close neighbors who could be bothered. And it's only those two - the other three are nice and cozy sleeping inside. I think that's why the two are extra noisy outside - trying to get them to wake up and come out. Yesterday the welsummer even sang an egg song along with her regular noises which she's never done before. Has this ever happened to anyone else? These two are the most regular layers, but our cochin also lays and she's one of the ones who stays inside. I've been getting up and poking them back in the coop (and closing the door!) until it's light out, but I was wondering if there might be something else bothering them. At first I was afraid it might be a predator but no sign or damage anywhere. Maybe it's the changing seasons confusing them? Are they hormonal because they started laying a few weeks ago? The strangest part is that these two normally HATE each other, chasing and pecking and squabbling, yet they come out together to bok bok bwaaaaaak up a storm in the morning.
