Colorado

Well we did end up going to the harvest festival/wine tasting down at Holy Cross Winery, but it was so crowded and stinkin' hot we only stayed about an hour. We were going to buy a couple bottles of merlot but the line for the register was literally out the door so we were too. Took the long winding drive up Phantom Canyon and through Cripple Creek to look at the leaves. It was a popular activity, very busy road, but a good chance to put our new Subaru through its paces on the gravel. The leaves were gorgeous and if anyone has some spare time I highly recommend going up this weekend!

I have a chicken question too. For the past few days our BR and welsummer have been waking up extremely early to make a racket, around 5-5:30AM, before it even starts getting light out. I thought at first that it was the light of the full moon tricking them, but they did it again this morning when it was clouded over. It's not that it's early for me at that time (though IT IS) but we have close neighbors who could be bothered. And it's only those two - the other three are nice and cozy sleeping inside. I think that's why the two are extra noisy outside - trying to get them to wake up and come out. Yesterday the welsummer even sang an egg song along with her regular noises which she's never done before. Has this ever happened to anyone else? These two are the most regular layers, but our cochin also lays and she's one of the ones who stays inside. I've been getting up and poking them back in the coop (and closing the door!) until it's light out, but I was wondering if there might be something else bothering them. At first I was afraid it might be a predator but no sign or damage anywhere. Maybe it's the changing seasons confusing them? Are they hormonal because they started laying a few weeks ago? The strangest part is that these two normally HATE each other, chasing and pecking and squabbling, yet they come out together to bok bok bwaaaaaak up a storm in the morning.

Coloradogal, you have marans? I am gagging for marnas and olive eggers. I just moved into a house where I can have chickens. I don't have the ability right now to have chicks but will soon.
Can I contact you?
Thanks. Oh, my name is mo too. So we have two Colorado 'mo's' :)

I do have one marans roo left. The other 2 went to Grandma's house but I do have their babies. :) It will get much harder to hatch in the winter as the cock just isn't as active as springtime. This might mean far more unfertile eggs but I'm willing to give it a shot when you are ready. Just contact me. ~mayah

Yes, it is normal. Some hens are just very happy in the morning and you either need to keep the door closed to help contain the noise or bribe the neighbors if they get upset. It can make a rooster look like nothing when 15 hens start rocking and rolling, but at least it usually isn't all of them every morning.

Welcome Mo.2 !

Thanks coloradogal.
do you sell fertile egg only or do you sell chicks too? If someone goes broody this spring I could get eggs, otherwise I would need to buy chicks. I don't have anywhere now for babies. I'd have to wait until spring, but that is fine. Just knowing I can get some is great.

I don't sell chicks or eggs... I do however love to give them away. :) But if you should want to donate chicken feed to me for the parent flock, I'll take it.

So this morning my oldest daughter (21) texts me and asks which cockerel is missing his leg band. I tell her #11, why? She say that he got aggressive with he this morning. I ask what the circumstances were, and apparently she walked in to the run and he swiftly came up to her and pecked at her repeatedly. I told her to go back out and inform him he was not the dominant life form in the chicken run. So she did as I told her, and went back out and challenged HIS position. she chased him around and popped him on the head (not hurting him) a couple of times until he would avoid her like the plague! When I came home from work today I walked up to him quickly and he wouldn't even make eye contact. Hopefully it will cure him for a while..... The culprit

We also had some action in the yard yesterday evening...

That is a great pair of pictures! Love the ruff on the one on the right! :) Can almost hear, "grrrrrr" LOL

Oh, gotcha....I will be happy to donate and perhaps ask your opinion on some honey I just harvested from my bees;-)

Oh hold the phone, you have hives? Talk to me! Last year we were intent on setting up a couple of hives, and then the more we read, the more complicated it sounded, and we decided maybe we weren't up to the task. In the end it would probably not have been a good year to have bees here (too dry for a lot of blooming), but I still think maybe I got dis-persuaded too soon. Is it difficult/complicated to maintain them? Do they require a lot of attention/time?

I so love this forum - there is no limit to knowledge, experience, and willingness to share, and I've never been so glad to have found a community!
