Colorado

OK guys, I have a non-chicken question.  I'm trying to get my family together for what will probably be the last chance to spend a week together as a family with my 86 year old mother.

I had found a place in CA, which is where they ALL are from that they said would be fine.  Well, now my brother wants me to find a place in CO.  I'm actually quite pi**ed off cuz I don't want to drag my mother from CA to CO WITH her dog, which she won't leave, but if it's what my brother wants, that's what my mother will do.  Anything to please my brother, SIGH.

Anyway, although I have lived in CO for 20 years, I'm a real home body, was a real workaholic and usually broke, so I haven't done much 'tourist' kind of stuff.

I'm looking for a place in the mountains that I can rent a cabin.  Preferably by a lake or nice river/stream.  If a lake, preferably one small enough that it won't be overrun with motorboats, jetskis and waterskiers.  Would be nice if it was by a campground as my brother has already said he doesn't like to stay in cabins and will probably go off by himself and camp (go figure, plan a family vacation and it's too much trouble for him to actually join in).  I'm not trying to restrict suggestions, just letting you know preferences.  Please suggest anything you can think of.

I would like it to be a pretty, picturesque place for my mother's sake.  She and my father spent 15 years traveling the states as he was a photographer and she has a great love of nature.  Heck, it's CO, how bad could the scenery be?  Anyway, if any of you have vacationed around the state and have suggestions, I'm taking any that are offered.

Well, I'm off do start googling.

Hope everyone around Wetmore Fire is safe and they will be home soon.

Don't know if it would fit your end intent but there are some smaller ski resort type hotels around. You may be able to get a good deal on multiple rooms. Monarch was inexpensive and nice, though I haven't been there in years. If nothing else you can take everyone on a drive through garden of the gods on a day. That's an awesome stop for photographer types.

POZEE where are you? Are you and yours OK?? Is anyone else in our group near the evac area? Wendell, I suspect you are safe....too far north??

Thanks for asking :) I am about 10 miles south of Pueblo, on the west side of the highway but right on the frontage road, so unless the wind changes direction and blows really hard my way, we should be fine. The wind was coming out of the southwest most of the day, so pushing the fire northeast, and it started in Wetmore, which is west and a bit north of us (maybe 30 miles or so, I've only been there once, lovely little place), west (I believe) and south of Wendell but a good distance away. Wendell is right, if no one was fighting it he could be in its path depending on wind. If they can get it knocked well down tonight I won't worry too much, but if they don't and the wind reverses I may worry enough to take part or all of the day off in case I think I need to prepare. We have 8 cats in addition to the 7 chickens, a couple of large and couple of small carriers that are quickly accessible and a huge Varikennel I can pull out of storage if I have to. Hopefully it will not even get close, but it is something I think about and plan for just in case.

You guys and gals rock :)

Is it weird that I added an incubator to my amazon wish list?

I put a brisea manual turn mini incubator on there.

If it's weird then we are both weirdos - I did the same thing only added one of the bigger cabinet-type ones :)

So far, 2 have made it. 2 more have pipped. I've never had a hatch come early before like this. I could see 1 or 2 coming early but 4? These were for MtMargie and I just wanted perfect little chickies for her. I incubated these in a different place this time, closer to my stove. Perhaps there were periods of time where they were warmer than normal?

I called my brother this morning and I was going to give him the incubator to hatch some of his. He wants fall chicks so that by the time Spring gets here, they'll be laying. I told him that I may just keep the incubator here, do a few of his if this hatch is a bust so that Margie can get a great group.

Of that last set of 5, 2 of 5 turned out to be rumpless. I can assume they were the EE crosses? They'll be a great combination for my rumpless colloncas this Spring.

The 2 little frizzles (still seem to have weird feathers so on the fence as to whether they are frazzled) that were quite hairless for a long time are finally starting to get feathers. The little frazzle hen is still very small but very plucky. The 2 normal frizzles are beautiful.

On another note: I bottled my first bottle of kombucha tea this morning. It was very yummy and my scoby is loving her larger container. My milk kefir grains are almost ready to be split if anyone is interested. I'm having a tough time getting my water kefir grains to do what I want them to do. sigh. but the kombucha is wonderful. No more $3-$4 bottle of kombucha from whole foods. yay me!

Sounds like late lockdown hasn't hurt anything, really - placement may have made the difference, but my best guess is they will be fine and wonderful :)

Glad to hear your little frizzle-frazzles are getting feathers finally!

I am completely ignorant of kombucha, scoby, and kefir, can you enlighten me or point me to a good resource to learn about them?

How is your Mom?

Just emailed a friend of mine who went on a really nice vacation in the mountains last year for very reasonable, to ask the name of the place. What time of year are you planning for?

Way off any current topic, does anyone have other-than-white leghorns? I have been looking into the silver and browns a bit lately, and the more I look the more I like. Clearly not a dual purpose breed, but they are really pretty (I know, not the best reason to get a new breed, but they are generally good layers too). Still love my Speckled Sussex and feel pretty sure they are nearing POL, have the new coop almost finished but given the forecast I probably won't be ready to move my girls into their new digs for another week - have to address some pretty significant gaps around the human access doors, then after that it's just a matter of hanging roosts, snugging it up to the run, cutting access, and removing the two coops and runs from the run. As I have often said, when I type it, it goes so fast! Then when I start doing the work, it goes so s-l-o-w-l-y!

All of us are retired/unemployed at the moment so we are really flexible. Maybe mid July.

I've been googling. Most of what attracts me seems to be in the Western part of the state. Beaver Lake, Ramona Lake, Durango. I LOVE Crested Butte area, one of the few places I've vacationed.

The best place I have ever stayed in Co is the Red Rooster Inn. Its a tiny bit South of Glennwood springs. 4 adults and 2 kids about 120 per night with a lovely lemon pancake breakfast.
You can google it. Relatively inexpensive esp compared the the Colorado Hotel. The springs are there too and your mom might like the history of that and a dip in them and then dinner at the Colorado is always nice. The Inn is lovely with a little fishing pond and an Italian Villa feel and views that make you want to sell everything to be a homeless person there. We take all out of towners there. There is only one warning I have for you. There are two ways to get there, on the road the college is on or Red Cannon road. Do not take Red Cannon road. It is the most dangerous road I have ever been on. I refused to ride in the car and walked it with my baby girl and when we came down a biker babe looked at me
and said "i wouldnt even walk that road".
Of course, you could go get beer with your brother and take him on that road with you driving.....just a little sibling torture.......

She just emailed me and said it was the Mountain Shadows Resort in Estes Park. I think they went early spring, though I wouldn't swear to it. I swear at lots of things, just not that :)
