Colorado

Hatch day for the last batch of chicks for the year should not be until tomorrow.  I didn't put them in lockdown until Sunday.  I woke up today and there is 1 baby chick and 2 more that are pipping.  My temperature wasn't off.  Now I'm concerned I miscalculated lockdown.  Anyone else ever have this issue?  Did I completely mess up the hatch for the other chicks?

Beating myself up right now.  I feel horrid.

I wouldn't worry too much. Some babies just like being early.

thank you all for your responses on our move from Texas to Colorado! I was terrified at first (Texan born and raised!) but I'm really getting "into it" now. Been so busy with the packing and all the planning that I haven't had a bit of time to review the boards and respond!

We are planning on getting two dog crates (2 girls in each one) with rags/pine shavings in the bottom and a blanket to cover if needed. They will travel in the suv with me. We are bringing our coop with us (long tractor) and I'll be purchasing heat lamps for them once we get there.

My husband is alreay there, working the new job and he will be finding us a place between now and December when the boys and I come up!

(did I just say I wasn't terrified anymore?!?!? I think I lied..... I'm still terrified!)

LOL

So far, 2 have made it. 2 more have pipped. I've never had a hatch come early before like this. I could see 1 or 2 coming early but 4? These were for MtMargie and I just wanted perfect little chickies for her. I incubated these in a different place this time, closer to my stove. Perhaps there were periods of time where they were warmer than normal?

I called my brother this morning and I was going to give him the incubator to hatch some of his. He wants fall chicks so that by the time Spring gets here, they'll be laying. I told him that I may just keep the incubator here, do a few of his if this hatch is a bust so that Margie can get a great group.

Of that last set of 5, 2 of 5 turned out to be rumpless. I can assume they were the EE crosses? They'll be a great combination for my rumpless colloncas this Spring.

The 2 little frizzles (still seem to have weird feathers so on the fence as to whether they are frazzled) that were quite hairless for a long time are finally starting to get feathers. The little frazzle hen is still very small but very plucky. The 2 normal frizzles are beautiful.

On another note: I bottled my first bottle of kombucha tea this morning. It was very yummy and my scoby is loving her larger container. My milk kefir grains are almost ready to be split if anyone is interested. I'm having a tough time getting my water kefir grains to do what I want them to do. sigh. but the kombucha is wonderful. No more $3-$4 bottle of kombucha from whole foods. yay me!

POZEE where are you? Are you and yours OK?? Is anyone else in our group near the evac area? Wendell, I suspect you are safe....too far north??

We are WAY too far north and east. though, if no one was fighting the fire it could concievably get to us eventually. We had a great view of the smoke however until it really started to blow.

I put a BIG bag of leaves in the hen house today. They love it!

OK guys, I have a non-chicken question. I'm trying to get my family together for what will probably be the last chance to spend a week together as a family with my 86 year old mother.

I had found a place in CA, which is where they ALL are from that they said would be fine. Well, now my brother wants me to find a place in CO. I'm actually quite pi**ed off cuz I don't want to drag my mother from CA to CO WITH her dog, which she won't leave, but if it's what my brother wants, that's what my mother will do. Anything to please my brother, SIGH.

Anyway, although I have lived in CO for 20 years, I'm a real home body, was a real workaholic and usually broke, so I haven't done much 'tourist' kind of stuff.

I'm looking for a place in the mountains that I can rent a cabin. Preferably by a lake or nice river/stream. If a lake, preferably one small enough that it won't be overrun with motorboats, jetskis and waterskiers. Would be nice if it was by a campground as my brother has already said he doesn't like to stay in cabins and will probably go off by himself and camp (go figure, plan a family vacation and it's too much trouble for him to actually join in). I'm not trying to restrict suggestions, just letting you know preferences. Please suggest anything you can think of.

I would like it to be a pretty, picturesque place for my mother's sake. She and my father spent 15 years traveling the states as he was a photographer and she has a great love of nature. Heck, it's CO, how bad could the scenery be? Anyway, if any of you have vacationed around the state and have suggestions, I'm taking any that are offered.

Well, I'm off do start googling.

Hope everyone around Wetmore Fire is safe and they will be home soon.
