Colorado

This is timely. 6 of our chickens hopped the fence tonight to visit the neighbor! We have frequently seen a dog in this neighbor's yard, however, thankfully, he was not there tonight! Hubby went out to feed them a treat and only 3 showed up. The sun was almost down so I assumed they had gone to bed but, nope. We could see them walking around on the other side of the fence! We hurried over to the neighbors house, caught each chicken and tossed them back over the fence! I actually had the thought, "Wendell has a 6' fence with no roof and HIS chickens don't fly over!" Then I see this post! LOL Our chickens are extremely good fliers! I wish they weren't quite SO good! Tomorrow we will put up some chicken wire and move some higher perching places to make it more difficult to get to the top of the fence.
Thankfully these neighbors love our chickens.

They've been watching them grow and commented on how big they've gotten. We have been very blessed that not one single neighbor has expressed any complaint about our chickens and every neighbor we've talked to either said they didn't know we had chickens or said they weren't bothered by them in the slightest.

Apparently, another neighbor a few houses down has chickens also.
It is way cheaper and more astetic to trim their flight wings with scissors. Trim about 2-3 inches off their expanded wings. My my7 year old does this. Then they wont leave the run.

Just give it to them free choice. They will eat what they need, when they need it. Make sure they can't scratch it into the ground, or fill the container with debris. Mine is in an old flat tool tray, sitting on the roost. They hop up and take a few bites and go on their way.
You can mix ceyenne pepper in their feed for a couple days....might cause an egg. Heard it works.

I was looking at the broad breasted bronze, I've read they were good to raise in the city, not that noisy and very gentle. Most of the Hatcheries I look at say min of 25 birds! I'm ambitious and all, but 25? even if you lose some, I'd be overrun with birdies...
probably about half will be roos so you would conceovably keep themm in your freezer and open up the coop space a little.

Is there anyone on here that has ducks? Or anyone know of a good place to get them? Hatching eggs or already hatched?

I have 3 ducks, 2 peking (male and female) and 1 female runner, that are 8 months old. I'd love to rehome them to a nice place with a pond. I have all chickens and they tend to be messier in the coop than I'd like. Egg production is down a tad bit. I'm only getting about 3 eggs a week now.

Well I don't have a pond :( but we will have a kiddie pool...

Narragansetts?
Sure... I'm easy when it comes to breeds.

Hmm, not sure whether Big R carries Barley, but you might ask there, if they don't have it they may know who does. I buy ACV at Vitamin Cottage, and you can add some to the regular cheap pasteurized stuff to make your own supply after you buy the first bottle. Seems like the ratio is 1:4, and then leave it with just a piece of cheescloth or paper towel rubber banded over the open bottle, put in a dark place, check in 2-4 weeks, once you see the "mother" (cloudy part) in there, you have accomplished what you wanted, and can continue making your own in the same way ad infinitum. I have yet to try it myself, my cabinets are so stuffed right now from stocking up on canned and dry goods when the price was right, I have to wait until we use some things up :) I'm betting Coloradogal has been doing this for years, though.
Easy peasy to make your own. I have multiple casks of all sorts of fermented stuff around here. I'd love to find someone who wants a kombucha mama or some kefir grains. They are multiplying like crazy lately. I love red wine vinegar and I swear, it truly is the best stuff I've ever gotten anywhere. It makes divine dressing and i hate to admit that sometimes, I'll take some cheese curd and add the red wine vinegar and just let it ferment for a day. So very yummy. :-) You guys want cultures... man, do i have cultures. :-)

So here's where we're at with the Urch-Turnlund Order:

I list 24 LF plus leghorns I order, 15 Bantams split between maggiemo and megshenhut, and 10 turkey poults bstween wsmith and coloradogal, with the possibility of me adding a couple more, still on the fence but really want to try them. We easily meet the minimums for each type of poultry.

The price list advises I can't call until 6 pm our time (arrgh, I'm such a morning person!) so will call at 6 pm Friday, unless I can get an email allowing me to call earlier. Will let you know what I learn, assuming I am able to get in touch :)

and the assortments that I'd want to try in both bantam and big girls. I suspect we'll easily have the minimum.

Welcome!! I was starting to feel lonely with so many people in Colorado Springs! I'm in Denver. I didn't know you could have chickens in HR, how many are you guys allowed?

I have 1 female pekin duck who lost her mate a few months ago. She loves her kiddie pool. You are welcome to have her.
Im not sure what else to do with her short of orange duck since I couldnt find a male for her.

would she be OK alone until I got others? Correct me if I am wrong but don't they mate for life? Maybe another female would suffice?
