Colorado

Hi BYC and Colorado BYCers

We are in Boulder CO, new to BYC, new to chickens, building the henhouse in the next couple weeks, getting the chicks in March/April, just going to have a few.

We've done our homework and will search BYC for additional advice, but any quick recommendations on where to get (and what to get) just a mix of 3 chicks (for egg laying)?

Just 3? Can you give us an idea of the dimensions and if it will be insulated as 3 may not be enough for winter cold?

I always make sure I have 2 of each breed and 5 to 6 for a minimum if it will be an uninsulated coop. Always plan on losing 10% of your flock just to stuff.... the common problem here is predators and this unknown thing called SCD, sudden chicken death.

Welcome to our new members!

Wendell, you are so organized, looks like a very workable schedule. I am really looking forward to seeing your chicks - and I LOVE the blue marker on the head spot, that is genius!

I started working on the Colorado Chickens website over the weekend, will try to get more done tomorrow, all I've really done so far is some of the text on the homepage and the basic "Welcome to Colorado Chickens.". As a complete novice to building a website, I see that I know nothing LOL - I clicked in one area that said it was for a background image and I can't get it to paste, it winds up pasting in another block on the page, so I have some homework to do. I'll add pages for Q&A, Breeds, etc., pages suggested by members, and then pages for members who want them. At least I think I will - if that presents new problems I guarantee I will be here begging for help. I PMd Dennarahl, and Lees I may also accept your offer to help, I know when I'm over-matched, but I really think it will be a useful tool for all of us and any others in Colorado who think they may want chickens and haven't yet learned about BYC and the various in-state resources available to them.

Looking forward to a nice warm New Year's Eve at home - we haven't gone out on NY Eve in years and I don't see that changing ... ever :)

I did it! I bought eggs! They will be flying in from Montana; 18+ true ameraucana, olive egger, EE and Marans! No guarantee on how many of what but she said here purebreds are laying the best right now so it should be heavier on the ameraucanas.
Part of me can't believe I did it and the other part wants to skip around like a ninny!
How exciting! Altitude should not be a factor since they are coming from Montana. Looking forward to your hatching of these eggs!

Hello and welcome to the Colorado thread! With three hens you may want to go with prolific layers, that way you get more than one egg a day. Have you looked at Heritage chickens yet? These may be slow to start laying, but will lay for a longer time.

Sounds like you are learning as you go, and that is the best way! Did you decide which domain name you wanted to use? Be sure to let us know when it makes its debut!!!! Are you trying to get a picture to show in the background of the print? Or in a certain area of the page? Did you go with GoDaddy's website? I had a hard time with that one!

x2! I don't feel like such a dud now. Last time I went out for New Years was Y2K in Raleigh, NC lol. There's been a number of them since then that we've slept through.

I'm placing some more of my green eggs in the incubator to be born, hopefully, on my birthday. These should all lay olive eggs as I suspect my silkie and frizzle roos still aren't able to do the deed.

I'm actually very grateful and happy to be at home tonight. I'm with all the things that I love the most. Had they not figured out the whole milkaggedon, i had planned on doing a marathon session of cheesemaking. But can now just relax on the couch with my dogs at my feet listening to some great modern classical music. Ohhh, and hopefully, I'll be awake to see the fireworks lit off in Manitou.

For those who celebrate NYEve, May the New Year bring you the courage to face whatever may come your way and the faith that the new day will always be brighter.

from your optimistic pessimist,
mayah
