Colorado

Hey Wendell, thought you might like this. I was reading my first issue of Urban Farm and there is an article in it called 'All Aboard the Ark!' all about how some breeds of chickens have been approved by the Ark of Taste which caters to foodies and preservation of rarer breeds. Dominique's are one of nine breeds they have recognized and call 'culinary gems'.

Just got back from taking my daughter, Heather, to lunch at 3 Margaritas. This was to celebrate Heather passing her written exam and is now a licensed cosmetologist!

How wonderful! Congratulations to Heather! I took Bill to 3 Margaritas once for lunch, it was delicious!

Weird question....

I had a friend ask me if I would consider driving her Mom home to Colorado - from Virginia.
I've never been further west than Tenn so it would be an adventure. She said that it shouldn't take more than 3 days to get there.... ? Could that be true?

It might depend on what you are driving and your driving style. When I moved here from Upstate NY I did the drive in two days with a full sized conversion van loaded floor to ceiling. I was 15 years younger, of course, and am less inclined now to sit in the driver's seat 12-13 hours at a time. 8 or 9 I could do, though, and if you had a few days to relax and see some sights before you had to drive back - or even better, if you are leaving her here with a car and flying back, it could be a great way to see more of the US.

Oh how interesting! What are the other 8?

I think all three of my black girls are laying now, come on Tini my little EE, you can doooooo it! (she is squatting now though!) I heard serious egg song earlier, got one egg, thinking that we shall have another before the day is out. My girls seem to lay around 12-2 is that odd? They are NOT liking the snow. They got a big bowl of oatmeal (warm) mashed with bananas, Spoiled.
They are not real thrilled with the cold. I think I'll go shovel off the back area a bit so they can get out of the coop, even though the door is open.
Not too many mice here, we do have 3 cats, and I put down poison blocks behind rocks where the chickens can't get it, I also keep my basement pretty well poisoned with blocks. Hey you stupid mice better stay the heck outta my wine cellar! I'm tellin' ya! We do get rats from time to time because the crazy cat lady down the street (as opposed to the crazy chicken lady up the street me) feeds them! That and the coons, but I have an pellet gun that deters them from visits here. Helps to be a good shot :)

I too made beans last night! I made lentil soup, my fave. Oddly my girls don't much care for beans, I would have thought they would. They do love the wild rice though! I am going to have to pop over to the market later and pick up some fruit for them on the markdown rack, love that middle eastern store! :)

Chickens are for certain like potato chips, you just can't have 1!

Spoiled, indeed :) Mine got oatmeal this morning too, along with their FF, and their afternoon apple when Bob got home :) Funny they don't like beans, I would think they would like them too, although it seems I read something once about how the protein in them might not be as digestible for chickens as other forms of protein. I saved all my ham bones and the little chunks of fat from making beans and ham and gave them to the girls the next morning when I left for work. When I got home those bones were picked CLEAN!

Ok, here's one for all my encouraging friends, and the doubting Thomases on the thread.

TA DA!!!

It's GREEN !! Egg on right is a Dom (I think), just for comparison.

I just want to apologize to my EE, Beauty, for all the names I have been calling her.

Woo hoo!!!

Must be a good egg day - I had my first three egg day and I think all three were from the Sussex Sisters, all were in the nest box not preferred by the Cochin and the Red hen :)
