Pozees: When you come over we'll go through my digital poultry old-time library and you can have copies of whatever you want. I really enjoyed "the call of the hen"

I took some time over the weekend and set up a tentative breeding/setting/hatching schedule. Of course, it is all subject to change, but I needed to have something of a plan writen down. There will be specific periods that I will have fertile eggs available. After we do 4 hatches, if the hatch rates are good enough (i want about 100 chicks this year) I can keep the breeding pen running until people don't want any more fertile eggs, at ehich point the breeding pen will be shut down.
Here is the tentative schedule:

2013 Eggs collection and incubation/hatching schedule

Mar 07: Set eggs

Mar 8-20: collect fertile hatching eggs (potentially about 70 eggs available)
Mar 20: collect eggs 1 week
Mar 28-ish: 1st Hatch

Mar 30-Apr 11: collect fertile hatching eggs (potentially about 70 eggs available)
Apr 12: collect eggs 1 week
Apr 19-ish: 2
nd Hatch
Apr 20: Set eggs
Apr 20 – May 6: collect fertile hatching eggs (potentially about 70 eggs available)
May 07: Collect eggs 1 week
May 13-ish: 3
rd Hatch
May 15-?: collect for selling fertile hatching eggs
May 15: Set eggs
Jun 05-ish: 4

If we get an 80% hatch rate, then we should have around 100 chicks. More could be set…..
That's terrific! If we move out to the country I'd be really thrilled to perhaps add some of your babies to my flock! They are beautiful!

Hi BYC and Colorado BYCers

We are in Boulder CO, new to BYC, new to chickens, building the henhouse in the next couple weeks, getting the chicks in March/April, just going to have a few.

We've done our homework and will search BYC for additional advice, but any quick recommendations on where to get (and what to get) just a mix of 3 chicks (for egg laying)?

I did it! I bought eggs! They will be flying in from Montana; 18+ true ameraucana, olive egger, EE and Marans! No guarantee on how many of what but she said here purebreds are laying the best right now so it should be heavier on the ameraucanas.

Part of me can't believe I did it and the other part wants to skip around like a ninny!

Hi, new to BYC, we are in Boulder (I'm a Loveland native, though!).
Can I ask where you got your chicks?
Thanks,
- Burke

Hi Burke
I'm in Boulder too. Welcome!
I got 10 of my birds (as chicks) from Randal Burke hatchery. the rest (14 more) I got from various people selling on craigslist....5 here, 4 there...6 over there.....
I have only been keeping birds since April but I think you might want to keep a few more than 3 birds, maybe 5 or 6 minimum. See what others say who have more experience than I.
There are some great people here and lots of really great informations.
Good do have you join us.

Hey there. I am up above Jamestown. Unless you are getting chicks from someone here, the best place to get chicks, (better quality) that I have found locally in our area, is Hygiene Feed. Murdoch's has the most chicks for sure, but I have had issues with some of their birds as they got older. Not as sturdy so to speak. Maybe it was just the luck of the draw, but that is my experience.
Mo, I didn't know you were in this area..... I am not alone

FWIW I would only buy chickens or chicks from someone here after having not such a good expereince with craigslist and hatcheries.
