I would say it would depend on the breed you pick and how many eggs you normally go
through. A Bake-a-holic will use more than average, for instance. 3 moderate/good egg layers were good enough for my DH and I with extras to give away on occasion. I would just get some excellent egg layers and skip the fancy breeds and you should have plenty. Are you wanting all one breed or a mix for a colorful basket?
Nope! I was only using what I found in the yard and I was pulling the cord out of this giant knot. None of the pieces were longer than 2 ft either.![]()
I'm hoping to get several breeds but I'm seeing my lack of patience may make that difficult. I was going to order through Meyer hatchery this week but I can't get the chicks till end of April or May so I'm not sure how I'm going to go about purchasing my chicks. Kinda bummed I had the breeds I want all picked from the catalog.
Sounds like an episode of farmer McGyver lol
It kinda was, wasn't it?I could deliver some chicks........Nice! Ya we relocated here from Denver last April. It's nice and quiet. I haven't been to the Heritage fail. I'll have to go this year.
Well, what breeds? There is a small hatchery fairly close to you that sells RIR chicks, Wendell (wsmith) is a Dominique breeder, i am hatching Olive Eggers and Marans soon and I don't remember who all else is hatching-for-sale soon. Maybe start with a few now then hit the feed stores in May? Stretches out brooding time but it may help the itch. Otherwise, you are pretty much stuck waiting. :/
The one I was going to order from there are: golden buff, rhode island red, barred, white and partridge Plymouth Rocks, blue, silver, golden & Colombian Wyandottes, blk australorp, Dominique's, hamburg's, Easter eggers, silver gray dorkings. I'd like a blue ameraucana. I'm not partial to any of the for a specific reason but those were the breeds that I picked from the catalog . Just want breed that are good layers and cold hardy. I don't want roosters and we have kids so a good disposition would be nice. Is rir Rhode Island reds?
