I know exactly what you mean by 'crazy chicken lady.' I haven't yet 'outed' myself to my facebook people yet since I don't have any chicks. I'm thinking a cute pic of little peepers will deter some of the negative comments when I do make the announcement. In the mean time, my status updates have dwindled to almost nothing because all I'm thinking about are CHICKS!!! AND OMG IT'S ALMOST TIME!!! But only a handful of my people know this is happening... Almost... almost....

That's one of the reasons I started my Windy Ridge Dominiques facebook page. I had a couple of "friends" on Facebook that continued to make snide remarks about the chicken operation, and didn't like it when i referred to one's greenhouse business and "only flowers" or to the book another was writing as "only cooking" neither are currently "following" me on facebook, if you know what i mean. I decided that some folks either just didn't understand, or were "too intellectual" to appreciate what Beth and I were doing. So now I keep my chicken comments to the Windy Ridge page, and other stuff in my regular page. I figure if my "friends" know me and want to be part of the chicken experience, they will subscribe to the other page. Whats cool, is that nearly 1/4 of my facebook "friends" are following the other page as well.

We had a discussion while at church Sunday.....A group of guys were talking about putting together a class on chicken raising, for whoever wanted to attend. They said they had someone from some co-op that would teach all of us all about chickens. After a few minutes, I asked if they were aware that about 5 families at church had some pretty good experience with chicken raising. I asked them why they needed to bring in a person to speak, when we had resources already here....... uh..Hmm..uh....That could work..........was the response. Too funny.

That's a good idea... I know you can set up filters in your friends/groups as to who can see what posts. Since I'm not setting up a business (just yet!) I can simply add a 'chicken' filter and post all my chick excitement to the people who haven't responded in a negative way. We live smack in the center of Denver and so we'll be keeping our chicks in our tiny bit of back yard (at least tiny in the sense that it's not a country sized farm!).

I have researched the HECK out of this whole endeavor and a few close friends know this but I'm sure many people will be blind-sided and think I jumped in without investigating what I'm really doing. I know this because my family has accused me of it in past situations where I did something they didn't expect. I know you guys understand, but I have a family of people who think I'm weird/stupid cuz I want to grow my own food and keep chickens.

I guess I'm trying to say thanks for being here and letting me vent my chicken excitement in a safe and supported place!

Aaah, okay, now I understand - and yes 3/4" plywood is expensive!

You may have just found your new "egg money" income stream. Once you get this down, we'll all be lining up to have you build us incubators, hatchers, and brooders :)
I get my 3\4" plywood from pallets at work. It's not the prettiest finish, but it's not that bad either.

Hi All! I am new to BYC and new to raising chickens. I found this Colorado post very helpful and was so glad to find others in my area although it looks as though most are from the front range, I am located on the western slope on the outskirts of Carbondale. I purchased my first chicks last Sept. three of the cutest little fluffball silkies and all have been doing very well to my great suprise! I had anticipated that on my first attempt they would face certain death either from my lack of knowledge or the constant threat of predators (bulldogge puppy included.) I was hoping for all hens and as it turns out two of the three are roo's! I am hoping to get rid of one of the roosters for the time being and when I am able to get another hen or two I will also get rid of the other rooster. If anyone is interested I will give them away for free and might be able to deliver to certain areas. I will attempt to post pictures tonight. One of the roosters is a very handsome all white and the other roo is a black with lavendar. The black one is a noisy little bugger, he typically crows when I approach the coop. Hes not very loud but he sure tries. He is much more friendly and assertive than the white roo, he likes to be handled and is less afraid. The white one is tame although a bit shy. Please let me know if are intersted, they are approximately 5 months in age. Thanks to all for the helpful information!

Have one of mine that is limping and has been now for 4 days. I put her in with the 8 week olds in the coop where she has limited ability to move and close access to food and water. I have been keeping vitamins in the water for her. She still isnt better but is putting weight on her foot. I suspect it will take a little bit of time. I may bandage up her foot, just to give it stability later today. I've hesitated until now as she has been content to mostly just nest under the heat lamp.

The joke in my house is that I went speeding by crazy cat lady to crazy chicken lady. My friends/family know not to bring up chickens in any way around me or I'll talk and talk and talk.

Lol... Knowing you as I know you Wendell, I think it's hilarious that they wanted to bring in chicken experts when they had you. Too funny.

Pozees: How are the silkies doing?
