Colorado

Hi All! I am new to BYC and new to raising chickens. I found this Colorado post very helpful and was so glad to find others in my area although it looks as though most are from the front range, I am located on the western slope on the outskirts of Carbondale. I purchased my first chicks last Sept. three of the cutest little fluffball silkies and all have been doing very well to my great suprise! I had anticipated that on my first attempt they would face certain death either from my lack of knowledge or the constant threat of predators (bulldogge puppy included.) I was hoping for all hens and as it turns out two of the three are roo's! I am hoping to get rid of one of the roosters for the time being and when I am able to get another hen or two I will also get rid of the other rooster. If anyone is interested I will give them away for free and might be able to deliver to certain areas. I will attempt to post pictures tonight. One of the roosters is a very handsome all white and the other roo is a black with lavendar. The black one is a noisy little bugger, he typically crows when I approach the coop. Hes not very loud but he sure tries. He is much more friendly and assertive than the white roo, he likes to be handled and is less afraid. The white one is tame although a bit shy. Please let me know if are intersted, they are approximately 5 months in age. Thanks to all for the helpful information!
Welcome to the Colorado thread!

There are a few people here that live on the Western Slope. Hope your find your guys homes soon, and looking forward to pictures.
Thanks for the reply! Im not in a rush myself to rid of the roo's as they are so sweet but I do worry a bit for the lonely pullet. Poor gal! I havent noticed any problems with the roosters yet but I have a feeling its only a matter of time before the two roosters and one hen becomes a problem. My sister has a coop with 3 rode island red hens that are about a year old now, do you think if I were to relocate one of my silkie roosters to her coop he would be outcast?

That's a good idea... I know you can set up filters in your friends/groups as to who can see what posts. Since I'm not setting up a business (just yet!) I can simply add a 'chicken' filter and post all my chick excitement to the people who haven't responded in a negative way. We live smack in the center of Denver and so we'll be keeping our chicks in our tiny bit of back yard (at least tiny in the sense that it's not a country sized farm!).

I have researched the HECK out of this whole endeavor and a few close friends know this but I'm sure many people will be blind-sided and think I jumped in without investigating what I'm really doing. I know this because my family has accused me of it in past situations where I did something they didn't expect. I know you guys understand, but I have a family of people who think I'm weird/stupid cuz I want to grow my own food and keep chickens.

I guess I'm trying to say thanks for being here and letting me vent my chicken excitement in a safe and supported place!

People get that way about my reenacting hobby as well Some people just don't understand, or are so set in their versions of reality that they think any other activity that is different from their own is weird or silly. (Silly it a code word we used in our family inplace of "stupid" Kind of like prefacing a statement with "bless his/her heart".......)

2 rooster + 1 hen = interesting and exciting chicken yard activities.

Relocating one of the young cockerels is definately an option, but one that would have to keep an eye on and monitored. RIR hens have been known to be...'bless their hearts".....ornery?

I received a call today from the VA Hospital in Denver. I was offered the job up there. Yay!!!! I suspect it will still be a few weeks before I start but at least I'll be starting shortly. Now to get with my brother and have him begin the look around for a more fuel efficient vehicle.
