I use the terms sawdust and shavings interchangeably. They are essentially the same to me. Ground up, shredded wood works for chickens. I put in a thick layer and usually change it completely every 4 months or so. I just eyeball it and when it starts looking dirty it gets changed.

It took them about a month to come in. Love the place in Fort Collins that I got them. They have been awesome. So this is what I got yesterday 9 total. 3 americaunas, 1 Rhode Island Red, 1 barred Plymouth Rock, 1 partridge Plymouth Rock, 1 silver laced Wyandotte , 1golden laced Wyandotte, & 1 blk australorp. I'm in love. So today I called and went back to get 3 more. I got one more golden laced Wyandotte, 1 buff Orpington and 1 speckled Sussex. What's really cool is the lady didn't charge me a dime for the 3 I got today. Random act of kindness is super cool. Does anyone have input about any of the ladies? They seem to be settling in ok. My step dad built me a brooder box. Will have to post a pic.
So I just ordered a couple of these:
60 W ZooMed infared heat emmitters. I have a couple of 75 watt infared bulbs coming as well, but I wanted to try these out and see how they would work in my brooders. When they arrive I'll set them up and see what the temps are at floor level over a couple of days.
Ok, day 10 candling is complete. Roughly half the mixes were infertile, I have 8 with veins and one with an uber thick shell I can't see through so I let it stay. 12 of the 15 RIR eggs are growing.11 days to go...
