Just kidding!

As i sit here crying, i have to ask what is the best, most humane way to cull a chicken. As I mentioned a three/four weeks ago, we had a chicken who was hobbling. Took her to the vet they didn't know what to do, gave us antibiotics, no help. She stands occasionally and hobbles a little but we can't keep her indoors forever and she is getting no better. If someone would like her to try and make her better or would put her out of her misery, or tell me what I am supposed to do....

So sorry to hear this.....I had a chicken (Leghorn) with a congenital defect of the hock (what would be the knee joint on us). Her name was Crispy, and ofcourse she couldn't walk.stand up, nothing. I kept her as a "house chicken" after a visit from the vet to make sure she wasn't in any pain or suffering. It was like taking care of a disabled child. I kept her in "chicken diapers" and she stayed with me in the house. I hand fed her, water, the whole nine yards. I had her for a year and she died....on her own, not in pain. I think she knew she was very loved.
I also worked 8 hrs. a day, I had her in a ferret cage where she could see out the picture window, warm but no direct sun.

She was a good girl. Everyone said I should just do away with her, but just couldn't. So if you're willing and can do it, you might think about caring for her until she's ready to go, as long as she isn't in pain or distress.

Wow.... I just had a vision of me at the feed store with the bins of chicks.... I'm at the very least going to make a fool of myself giggling insanely at how cute they are, but I'm hoping my husband will be able to keep me from climbing in the bin! I'm thinking it'd be great fun to sit in the chick bin giggling with all the chicks climbing/jumping all around me!! I'll try to keep it together, but since I've got another week I can't make any promises!!!

Boulder Humane Society euthinaisis birds for $30. Maybe your humane society would do that too?

Hows the snow out your way?
I saw you were trying to hatch turkeys. Sorry to hear it didnt go well. What kind do you have, or were these to be your first?
We got about 5 inches, Monarch had 30 as of Friday afternoon. I don't know how much they got over the weekend, but it snowed on the mountains all weekend. I'm trying to hatch Blue Slates from my own birds. This will be the 4th year I've hatched them, well if things improve that is.

Does any one know where I could purchase a clear door for the older brown model gqf 1502? Every website I go to sells them for the newer white models and they are not compatible with mine.. It's going to suck come lockdown and not be able to monitor the hatching tray as I have a solid door.

Hey Adam
Can you just cut out part of the solid door and replace it with clear plastic?

That is going to be my last option, I would prefer to not have to butcher the door I have but if it is my only option that is what I will do. I just really liked the 100% clear doors they sell. I emailed gqf to see if they even make them any more. I may just have to watch eBay for a while before I see a used one show up.
