Boulder Humane Society euthinaisis birds for $30. Maybe your humane society would do that too?
I would probably go with something else before formal euthanasia again. I took Cher in to be put down by a vet when she was beyond hope. It took four shots and almost three hours for her to pass. Meanwhile she had bouts of confusion and was stressing as much as the drugs would allow her too. It had been similar with Shania but that time I just blamed it on all the tumors blocking the drug from getting to her heart effectively.

Thanks again samsr for the eggs

. They went into the new incubator late last night.. The countdown begins!
What breed of eggs did you get this time?

I inquired with our vet here in the Springs how they euthanize chickens. I was told they give them a shot into the heart. It did not sound like a very easy way to die so that's when I went looking for other ways. I asked someone about chopping off the baby's head and they told me that because of how small they are, it is often easy to miss. That chick was the first one that had a prolapsed rectum. Since then, I've had a couple that had to be put to sleep. Minor swelling around the vent area with Canadian Prep. H works but when it is out significantly, I haven't been successful at treatment.

I settled on the CO2 method as it is the calmest. I just put them in a big baggy, hold them and give it a press. Go slow. One press and wait for a minute or so. Press again, not prolonged pressing. Just a second or so. If you go too fast they say that the can get spastic twitches. So I go slow until they have fallen asleep and then another press. I'll leave the baby there until I have the hole dug and I'm sure she's gone.

dang it! my cuckoo maran looks likes its a roo. I got it on the 1st at a day old....he already has a decent sized pink comb on him... the feed store i got him from is willing to trade him out for a diff day old chick, but they have no more marans or welsummers till end of march. I don't want that big of an age gap in them!! I really want a chocolate egg layer! Anyone have a maran chick they would want to trade for this little roo? So far he's really sweet, but i just can't have roos.

Does any one know where I could purchase a clear door for the older brown model gqf 1502? Every website I go to sells them for the newer white models and they are not compatible with mine.. It's going to suck come lockdown and not be able to monitor the hatching tray as I have a solid door.[/quote

A small usb webcam would work well in this situation. They are cheap enough also

My cuckoo maran hens have nice sized combs and waddles. Is it that much more pronounced that your other cm pullets?

I only have one cm chick. The others are all diff breeds. I also have 2 rir chicks that are 6.5 wks old and they don't have combs that big or pink yet either

They do have sizeable combs and do seem to be more noticeable than others earlier. Can you take a picture and post for a marans breeder? I know sometimes people who see my girls assume because they have a bigger comb than some of the other breeds that they are roosters. =)

i'll try and get a pic up if I can.
