Colorado

Hey everyone! I've got a question and hopefully someone can help me out.

I have 12 chicks and a duck. I've been keeping the duckling in the brooder with the chicks. He is SOOOO messy. He's been getting all of the shavings soaking wet, and I have to change them daily. Question 1: Will the duck be fine in his own brooder/bin?

Question 2: I went in there yesterday and all of the chicks look like they are wet but they are kind of greasy/sticky. I tried to kind of rinse one of with just a warm wet paper towel and it seemed like it just made the poor girl crunchy and didn't remove any of the "dirty" stuff. I used the blow dryer to dry her off, but her fuzzies seemed caked down still. Suggestions? Is this normal? I can post a pic when I get home if necessary.

Thanks in advance!

No roosters....
Mine are about 1 week younger than yours. I hope I don't have any roosters!

I was thinking no roosters until i heard from one of the ladies i gave some straight runs too that one of her roos is worth some major fundage for his color/texture of his feathers. So now I'm thinking that maybe roosters aren't all that bad. =)

So I have some phoenix/silkie/maran crosses, hatch date tomorrow. So far, one of the phoenix eggs has pipped and one of the marans. This is the first time I left them in egg cartons so we'll see how that works.

My last hatch seems to be all silkie or frizzle crosses with ee and marans hens. They are beautiful. I'm trying to figure out which I am keeping and not keeping. So if anyone will be looking for some younger chicks, let me know.

Your duckling will be lonely, so I would get another one and then separate them from the chicks.

Ducks are so hard. I still wish someone would have told me 'No!" when I brought my 3 home. They are almost a year now and still as beautiful as ever and very, very fat. But they are very messy, they have watery poo and tons of it. They also need more care than the chickens in the way of insuring they have a clean water source. Kiddee pools are great until you are carting water and cleaning in the blowing snow, twice a day because even in a small rubber container, they get in and splash all over the place.

But they are the first out in the morning and the last in. They love even the crappy weather. They were swimming yesterday in the blizzard and just sitting outside with their heads in their wings. I keep hoping to find a duck lover for mine where they will be safe from predators but maybe have their own pond. Fingers crossed that eventually, I'll either find someone or get up enough to build them one.

They do need companionship. My little runner is fine hanging out with the chickens but the pekings prefer their own kind.

I MIGHT keep a rooster if I can get away with it.(Not sure what to oridance is in my town) Plus if my sebright turns out to be a rooster, it's gonna be really hard to get rid of him. She (for now) is the sweetest one of the bunch.

I don't get why roosters are such a big deal. Dogs are louder than most roosters. I just like having a rooster around as they do try very hard to protect the girls.

Speaking of barnyard things... how is it possible to still have a fly buzzing around?

Totally agree on the dog barking. My neighbors dog barks at leaves falling. Do you think I could get a mean enough rooster to take out that dog! LOL

jk people....

Ok.. So of the 3 chicks I hatched, the very first one is sooo noisy!! She chirps loudly all the time!! She woke me up 3 or 4 times last night. The other two chirp, but not obnoxiously like this one. Any one have any idea why? Every 20 minutes or so she just starts up again. She is in my basement and it echoes up the stairs!

Also I did the grab the chick by the nape check on my chicks for giggles. Two of the three hung there the other one(the loud one!) squirmed like crazy!
