Colorado

Hello all,

As of Monday I'll be setting eggs!! I have my Brinsea Mini Advance going and IT is doing very well....me on the other hand, well, I just need to learn to read directions on my thermometer/hygrometer!
I am really curious as to how it goes. I just bought this incubator to use in my classroom. Keep us posted please!

So I had my first 2 cases of pasty butt. Both of the cuckoo Marans. All 9 of the other chicks are fine. I feel bad as I didn't notice it yesterday but when I checked this morning it was really caked on there.. It was incredibly difficult to remove. I dipped their butts in warm water and got most of it off, not all but most.

I went and bought yogurt and raw acv. Holy cow does that acv smell horrible!! I mixed it with their water. I also made a mixture of yogurt and crumbles. They haven't tried it yet but I assume they will eventually.

I also bought a smaller feeder tray to make some mash out of the crumbles. I am hoping they don't waste as much and maybe it will help with the pasty butt too.

I sure will! I have everything good to go, will post when I set the eggs....I was mainly concerned about the humidity....from what I've read, that can make or break your hatch!!

Adam7, I remember Wendell from Windy Ridge Dominiques said something about putting molasses in the water with the acv for pasty butt too.....worth a try....!

I have the Brinsea Eco 20 and the only concern I have is with how much of a pain it is to clean the upper compartment. It hold heat incredibly well. It doesn't seem to have any hot/cold spots. It's easy to adjust. I like how the turner is on the outside. I also have their brooder, which I love. It only used 18w and I don't have the worries I once had about a fire.

I generally don't have pasty butt. I did two hatches ago on 2 but I also neglected to put them on probiotics early too. I am not sure why the probiotics seem to help, only that it does. I give my chicks a fermented/probiotic mash.

So... the feed store was supposed to get their chicks today and after calling several times and getting the 'we're still expecting them' message... I find out that they are waiting for a call from the post office because the chicks are coming in the mail! Um... it's SUNDAY!! and I thought you were getting your chicks from a more local source?! *SIGH*

Now I'm concerned about the state of health these chicks are going to be in when they finally do get to the store. The store says they will get multiple batches of chicks every week (varying breeds each week) but I want to make sure I get some orpingtons which is what they're getting this week.... Should I wait and see if they get another shipment later this week and hope THOSE chicks don't sit in a box in the PO all weekend or go and pick chicks from this first set and hope the ones that were weaker are the ones who died already and these remaining ones are stronger?
