Great discussions here today Introducing a broody with her chicks to a flock when they are already able to see one another is usually a matter of opening the access between them and watching for a while. Most broodies will protect their chicks from other chickens, but now and again one won't, that's why you stay and watch a while. If the older birds start pecking at the chicks and mama doesn't react to protect the chicks, then you are better off waiting until the chicks are bigger. Having a couple of escape hatches the chicks fit through and the adults don't doesn't hurt - a piece of 4-6" pvc, a box with a small entry hole, a low-mounted shelf deep enough the chicks have retreat, something along those lines.

Introducing chicks of different ages with no broodies is, as many have offered, slower, because at first the time has to be well supervised. Setting the two groups up where they can see one another, then letting them out to forage together, letting the smaller ones out first, works well, particularly if you can do so in an area where there are hiding spots (shrubs and the like) and where you know you can contain them in a safe area helps to manage the introductions. When I introduced my two groups, what I found most entertaining was that the first thing they did was check out each others' digs. They never reached the point of wanting to go to roost all in one, but when I moved them all out of their two houses into the bigger house, they had already been mingling and I had no problems. The bossiest hen was the production red, until the Speckled Sussex got bigger than her and stopped letting her bully them. Now they all get along fine.

Wire with 2" spaces would not do for chickens, not sure about turkeys. 2" spaces let lots of critters through, and are plenty big enough for a skunk or raccoon to reach through and grab heads/necks. Snakes can easily pass through spaces that large as well, and while they usually won't harm adult chickens (in fact they may be eaten by them) they will eat eggs and chicks.

carolynm, here's hoping by now you have a chick or one well on its way. I have had a tough time with shipped eggs, as have others, but sometimes it's the only way you can possibly get what you want. I set 24 Silkie eggs from Catdance and got 5 chicks - all beautiful chicks, although one of the whites has a crossed beak, but still seems to get enough to eat, so I'm hoping it's a hen I can at least use as a broody. Then I set some Blue/Black Sumatra and Salmon Faverolle eggs and got nothing, and set 6 game eggs that were horribly wrapped and shipped and as expected got none. Right now I have RIR eggs and Cochin eggs, and 4 SLW eggs in two incubators. One set of RIR and the SLW were transported by car from Berthoud, the other RIR and the Cochin eggs were shipped, the shipped RIR eggs were extremely well packaged, and my fingers are crossed for a hatch. I should know in two weeks. I candled today, didn't see as much as I wanted to, but it's just day 7, and I'm not at all ready to toss anything yet.

Picked up my chicks this morning. Everyone is active, drinking and eating. Sadly I had to go to work after getting them moved in. My Marans are a little smaller then the rest but the rest are Cornish x and red broilers so am not sure if those aren't just larger chicks as a rule. Cute little fluffy butts. Will post pictures later this weekend. Long day they called early this morning for pick-up. Of coarse I didn't want the chicks to hang out in the post office so called them last night to tell them to call me on arrival to get them. Elizabeth Big R also got 300 pullets in today along with ducks. They are overloaded. Some older chicks they said they were going to discount this weekend . Still trying to decide about their swap this weekend just to see all the animals!

Wow! I can't believe they are over full! I stopped by Big R in Falcon and they were empty except for some rooster chicks and a few ducks and geese. Not one pullet or s/r chick in the place!
