Colorado

I am excited about the fall 'culling'. Can anyone join in? I would love to be included. I have a little experience slaughtering. I am pretty good at the killing, better at the gutting and suck at the plucking.

Hi havenadtohold, I'm a Boulderite as well. I'm as east as I can be still be in Boulder. South Boulder Road and McCaslin.
Great to have you join us.

Nice, I bet you have a lot more space out there! I'm in Boulder proper roughly Broadway and Tablemesa but we've been looking to move out your way so we can...you guessed it...keep more chickens!

I am in the process of downsizing my flock from 24 to about 15. I have some 7 week old pullets coming in Wednesday. I have been keeping chickens now for a year and I think that 16 to 20 hens is about right for me. I am still figuring out what breeds I like and don't like. I think I am narrowing it down. After this batch of pullets I will cull a few more of the original flock and sell a few of the new ones and keep around 20 or so.
I do want some bantams though

They don't count in the above equation!
I just had a little coop built for them. Several of us here went in on an order from Duane Urch and I ordered some bantams. I can't wait! I am all ready for when they come!

I'm finally getting somewhere in my coop construction! AHHH! My poor babies are still in the garage with a little bit of time in the yard.

Question though: Will it be ok leaving the floor just as plywood and not putting anything overtop? Here's pics of the progress...and some of the girls.
My floor is plywood. I keep pine shavings on it.

Finally able to work on my pallet coop today. Bottom half bolted together and one corner of second layer up. I am attaching this to my current coop to enlarge it. Trying to save current siding for the exterior of edition. It's a real puzzle since the weather is so eclectic right now. don't want to take down the middle till the outside area is together, but attaching the sides to the current coop without trapping my siding inside well........ I'm babbling. Chicks are still happy in greenhouse but want to free range with the big girls. Meatys are growing, 4 weeks old, and the Marans are half there size but are starting to fly. So cute. Back to work again tomorrow. Will try to post pictures later this week.

Hello fellow Coloradans! I am new to BYC, although I have been stalking it for weeks in anticipation of getting chicks. I was still a few weeks away from being ready, but hubby jumped the gun at Big R yesterday and saw 4 little chicks on sale he couldn't resist. So we rushed to set up out brooder and are still working on our coop and run.
Now for my questions! I live in the springs and am having a lot of trouble finding good stores for chicken supplies. I think Big R is useless, as they never have the feed I need and are so expensive. So, does anyone know of a real feed store in my area that would have a big feed selection as well as grain selection? I need unprocessed wheat, as well as barley an oats and can't find them for the life of me!
Also, does anyone know of anyplace close to get unpasteurized apple cider vinegar?
Also, most cost effective place to get hardware cloth for the run?
Any advice or help in pointing me in the right direction would be much appreciated!!

Hello Chris. We do have a Tractor Supply in Canon City. Canon City is about 40 miles southwest of Colorado Springs. Also I would check with Sweeney Feed in Pueblo for the different things you're looking for like the wheat, etc. I believe Sweeney Feed will mix any kind of feed exactly the way you want.
And welcome.

Yay thank you sooo much!! I knew there was a TSC in canon, just didn't know if it was worth the trip, but I'm thinking as long as I can make a huge list of stuff and buy it all at once it would be worth the trip. Thanks for the tip about Sweeney, I will contact them tomorrow, that is exactly what I have been looking for!

And I apologize, I would have spelled it Kris but I was using Siri. Also if you haven't seen what CC has to offer, make a day of it. Check out the Royal Gorge Bridge or go river rafting.
