I'm a 3-day-old first timer and (of course) a little nervous. Two questions...
1. One of my blue Cochin bantams is much larger and a bit lighter colored than the other. The large one is almost as big as my LF Araucana chick. Is that normal?
2. A few of my chicks are very timid compared to the others two are D'Uccles and one is the smaller blue Cochin bantam.
3. Okay I lied, one more question. What is the best way to teach them to trust us? Nibbling yogurt off my fingers is the closest they come on their own...

Thanks everybody! It's great to have such a nice and supportive group! :)
Welcome to the chicken world!

1. I have no idea. I don't know anything about Cochins or Cochin bantams Sorry
2. and 3.: Timidity and trust can take time to deal with. Remember that chickens are individuals, and each has it's own personality. Chicks also remind me of kids......short attention spans, wild mood swings, and weird personality issues... aS they get older, keep giving them treats that they like. They are very much food motivated. If they associate you with good stuff to eat, they will learn to be attentive. Nibbling yogurt is a good start. It can take time.

I was looking down the creek at some deer crossing with my bino's and what did I see today. My rain catch barrel. YAY now I dont have to make another one. I took the 4 wheeler down and retrieved it. It only made it about 800 yards in the creek before the wind apparently blew it back out. My 9 week old chicks rode out the storm in the shed with my panel heater at their side. They sure did want out today. The older hens were in their coop. Their big door apparently blew open some time in the night. Luckily it was on the nonwindy side. I still felt badly for them, when I found out in the morning. All is well here, only part of one shingle blew off the chicken coop shed. Even the metal on the run made it through the evening. I must have overbuilt it correctly. I hope everyone else made it through OK.
Glad you found your barrel too! I have some friends that live near you, they lost some shingles, but I think that is all.

I at the moment cant..If you find your self just being overwhelmed the chicken fest 2013 is on May 18...What does CW repersent?..

A lot of chicks...My mom would kill me If I did that...."But they are so cute!!!" that is the only defense I would have...

Yup! you can bring them to ChickenFest and see if anyone would like some of them. Of course, you may want to keep them and seel the eggs and process the roosters.

I will be interested if in the group happens o be some sweet potatoes.
That's what I was hoping to get as well.

They are in with my others and I don't have any roosters. I ended up with all hens.

They are beautiful little birds, not very big but very quiet. They manage to blend in and are great hiders. I reread up on Colloncas and think one of mine is laying the greyish egg. I believe that the chick I thought was an EE mix that Margie got, in hindsight, as it came from that pretty greyish/green egg is actually a collonca mix as it did come out rumpless. I haven't hatched any more of those eggs but not I think I may start. =)

Seriously? She has been laying a green egg. ( I really need to find my camera to computer cord)

does anyone have a link to the zone laws for fountain.
I don't but I would suggest the fountain city website for their city ordinances, and the El Paso county website for the zoning. That's where I went several years ago, then I called the county to confirm my interpretation of the zoning for my area concerning poultry. I am RR5, which is zoned for hobby farms, thus we have no number restrictions regarding livestock, except that they must be taken care of, etc. .

Picked up my shipment of 29 eggs this morning at the Fountain post office. None were broken. I am still waiting for the next box, which should be here on Monday. between the two boxes, my incubator should be full.

Thanks for the zoning help, I am really worried about it but I have time so I need to not rush myself. I am just eager to get the girls some land and see there reaction to it.

For a fun time try calling extended stay hotels and when they ask you if you have any pets (because site says pets allowed, not specific at to what kind of pets) say oh just the three chickens but they are rather quiet. That was fun to do to the Sheridan, with rooms at $120 a night, discount for extended stay.
