Hello everybody I read all the thread finally catching again, nice coops and runs everybody, hatches too.
I am in the progress of making my coops as well I am going whit the stagecoach model but this weather again not cooperating.I will post some pics of the process.
I went ahead and start to incubate eggs this year so far I have 11 Marraduna basque and 11 black blue mottled d'uccle on lock down. I will have some extra babies if somebody is interested the d'uccles are fro wimicasa and the MB from GFF and Skyline.
The First week of May I will have some Salmon Faverolles and Lavender Ameraucanas as well this are from Sawmill farms in Florida stock.
If I don't find homes for the babies maybe I have to go to the chickens fest.

Well, the unbelievable happened. I've been collecting more bantam cochins eggs to incubate, writing dates on them, hen that laid them etc. They were on my kitchen counter waiting to collect enough to put in the incubator. I came home yesterday afternoon to an empty basket. I asked DH, where are my cochin eggs? What eggs he asks? The ones in the basket, I say. He says, oh I made eggs for breakfast.

Now mind you, I've been attempting to hatch eggs for a month and a half already and leaving the eggs there with no problem. And I also currently have approximately 11 dozen eggs in cartons in the refrigerator that I will be selling. Guess I have all 11 dozen to sell now since none of those got eaten. Back to square one with my cochin hatching.
How frustrating but it just means these ones you are saving now are going to be better!

I mentioned this on the FB group, but I don't think I mentioned it here....

Candled the shipped eggs yesterday, and though technically only day 6, 47 out of 48 show signs of development. !!!!!!

I hope we get a good hatch. We know that a lot can happen, but so far this if the best candling we have had.
How exciting! Keeping my fingers crossed for an awesome hatch.

Are the Salmon Faverolles roosters really docile and really good protectors of their flock? I thought I heard something of the sort.

Another question from a new chick owner: when is pecking order established? My chicks, that are now 2 months old get along so well...I'd love if pecking order was already established. There is definitely a dominant one, but she's not mean. Does that mean pecking order is established?

Ok, I have my 2 mo. in the coop with 3 mo. with a wire divider.
?? How long will the integration take? How long should I leave the divider up?

On the project side, I have the Auto fill 5G bucket assembled and ready to attach to the coop.
The chicken run is about 80% complete!

13 days till my 3 week European vacation(

Welcome! Looking forward to pics of those babies!

Pecking order is established now, but is also ever-evolving - one may suddenly get bigger or braver, etc. or you may add or subtract a chick or two, or the angle of the sun changes, almost any silly thing can change it, but it is essentially in place for the time being. Dominant hens are not always mean, just bossy, and they can get a lot less bossy if another one suddenly becomes more confident at some point. My SS pullets were totally afraid of the production Red, then one day one of them realized she was bigger and stopped backing down from her. She remained top hen, but in a far less obvious manner (no feather pulling, etc.).

Ok. If these girls continue to be so loud today, I may be having fried chicken for dinner! Not sure what their problem is. No eggs, just a lot of LOUD squawking. Neighbors are going to hear them for sure!

If you are able to integrate in a run you can observe how they interact, I would think in just a few days; let them out together and have treats so they are eating together - one of the most basic integration techniques in the animal/poultry world. Failing that, set the wire up so it can be removed with minimal effort, wait for them to go to bed, then take it down while it's mainly dark in the coop. When they wake up they probably won't even notice the divider is gone, or remember it was there.
