Colorado

One last thing: I am sending out payment to Yashar for some of his babies that are due to hatch soon. He'll send the first 15 and then the second 15. I have no idea he'll actually have once they come in.

I'm also doing another bulk feed order. I won't know for sure the price until I make the order as feed fluxuates monthly. I still have 12 bags left from the last. The best time to pickup from me is weekends and this next week, evenings. The week after this one, will be mornings and then days the following. Just PM me. If I don't answer right away either with text or call or PM, just know I'm not ignoring you. I'm probably working and without my phone for 12 hours during shift. (yeah, that sucks big time and I'm going through withdrawal symptoms).

I'd like to do a chicken swap the first Saturday June at the Colorado Springs Masonic Center. I dno't want it too close to Wendell's chickenfest. I should have the bulk order of feed by then.

Once again, I do apologize if I seem like I'm spacey lately. My only excuse is I have so many balls in the air and its just me keeping them up with help from my brothers when they can spare it.

edit: one last thing: I bought some turkey eggs from McMurray (actually my brother did and picked up and dropped off to me today). WIsh me luck that I have better luck with shipped turkey eggs than I do with shipped chicken. It's an experiment. Fingers crossed. I'll keep you all updated. I'm placing the eggs in 3 days, letting them rest in the incubator before putting the turner on. I'm also placing more silkie eggs and olive eggers after 7 days. So fingers crossed.

The babies arrived this morning!! Plus about 15 red star males, for warmth. SO our order of 28 (between the two of us) turned into about 44..... (including a feather-shanked "rare bird'). No dead chicks when we picked them up (we left all the kids home together, when my fried and I picked the chicks up this morning, just in case). We took them to her house first, to divvy them up, and let the kids see them, then grabbed my chicks, my kids, and came home to settle them into the guest bathroom.

All appear very healthy, and active. They all took to food and water immediately, and love their "Mama" (Brinsea brooder). After the first half hour, the "sorting" started (pecking order). Their little personalities are pretty clear already, and several have been named (not the boys... they will be heading to freezer camp eventually... though one is a bully, and the kids named him Malfoy)

The brooder warmer really CAN handle 20 chicks - they are all huddled under there just fine...

Unfortunately, between Online School connectivity issues (we home school through a virtual academy), and new babies.... my girls aren't getting much work done today. But at least my toddler hasn't eaten a chick yet.....
LOL. Just be careful I learned the sad way with toddlers & chicks. My son killed one with kindness.

Here are a few pictures from my eggs that hatched the weekend of 4/13.

STAY AWAY FROM THE DEATH RAY!!!!
They are sooooo freaking cute!!!

So very, very bummed. I had 5 silkie babies hatch on Thursday and I put them under the broody hen. They seemed to be doing fine and then today, I go out and 4 of them are dead. They were so beautiful and I'm so bummed. I was going to take the remaining one away but she screamed bloody murder and I didn't have the heart to separate her from her mama. So this next batch will be only silkie eggs and olive eggs. I'll set in another week to give me time to collect.
How sad. So sorry. :-(

When I was researching for roofing I saw that Home Depot sells suntuf panels and another brand that is almost half the cost. But I wanted mine to last, so I went with the suntuf stuff so I hope they'll be nice and clear for a long time!

We do have a slant to our run roof of about a 1ft difference from front to back, so I'm hoping that will be enough to mitigate any snow build up...

Did you try drilling through your panels to secure them in place?
I used a few of the cheaper version on a garden type shed that I built years ago. The hail was not kind to them one year and I ended up replacing them. I hope this helps. In my opinion, spend the extra money and get the better ones. Itl be cheaper in the long run.

This is my first time with Salmon Faverolles but what I read is they are docile, very friendly and the hens very sweet as well.I love the rooster coloration that is one of the reason that I am getting them, plus they are dual purpose. This last is not so much any more but I intend to start with that project.
Hmmm, I'm going to put them on my list.

How dis-heartening Mayah. Big hugs to you. I don't know what's going on over here either. My neighbors have had their chicks & some juv chicks die on them for no apparent reason. Last year I had a horrible time with the hatchery chicks I ordered and I'm not going that route this year. I found a local breeder in Fort Lupton for some chicks I need. I had no issues with my home hatched chicks that grew along side the hatchery chicks. Of the 25 chicks I got from Meyer I have 9 left. Of the home hatched ones that I kept (10) all are doing great and laying. The hatchery aren't even laying yet. Don't get me started on the meaties I got from Ideal. Is it some illness we don't know about yet?

Mayah, I'm so sorry to hear about the baby Silkies, what a bummer! There just isn't anything that makes it better, but know you have lots of cyber-hugs here from all your fellow chicken lovers.

ScottLovelandCO, nice looking chicks! What is the breed list again? They look really good, nice and fluffy and healthy.

FrogEggs, your setup looks like it turned out great!

Who was it that had the Silver Sebright male? I just saw a Wanted ad here on BYC from someone looking for one, you might check the Buy Sell Trade - his ad title is something like Roosters Wanted (I know, pretty shocking huh?)

I suspect had I kept the little silkie chicks in the house, they'd still be here. I wanted them to know the love of a mother hen though. I won't make that mistake again. The other losses from my flock and my SILs were from the prettiest little eqyptian fayoumis that came from one of the hatcheries. I have supplemental heat but even with that, they are having a hard time. 2 are in the house with the baby turkeys and the second to last hatch chickies. Judi (Pozees) is not having issues with her EFs but the rest of us seem to be. sigh. My brother lost 2 of his 4 turkeys but so far, my 2 are hanging in there. One of them is still very, very tiny so I'm trying not to get attached to the little gal. Thus the reason my brother bought eggs from McMurray to try.

Where is the Masonic Temple in Colorado Springs?

It's the Fillmore Exit, west at the top of the big, big hill. The DeMolay group sells spaces for yard sales the first saturday of every month because it has a great amount of traffic. So I figured that it might make a great place for a chicken swap too.
