The farmer was really nice, took back one rooster and one probable and gave me two laying hens back. I'll miss my Barred Rock rooster. He was gorgeous.

I also have three dog houses that will be available FREE. Pick up at ChickenFest. One is wood, the other two are plastic. I built the wood one, the plastic ones were given to me. The plastic ones are about 4 feet long and around 3 feet high. The wood one is just under 4 feet long. All can accomodate a medium-large dog. The wood one could use some new paint.

Hopefully I can claim one..Got two dogs of differing sizes....

That's pretty cool. Glad he helped you out. I felt pretty badly that we couldn't help. I'm keeping my eye on one of my chicks... very suspicious. I'm afraid to put them outside. If one is going to crow, I want him to be inside and surrounded by plenty of insulation when he does!

These Narrangansett poults are getting HUGE! They fly up to their roost (12 inches up) and roost at night. I might even try them with their brooder coop door open at night. We'll see what the overnight temps are for the next week.....They are getting feathered out enough that I think I will downsize their heat lamp and put the big lamp into brooder pen 6 in preparation for the upcoming hatch.

MiL and my oldest son and oldest daughter arrived last night at about 10:30 PM. MIL will be with us for a few months as she continues to recouperate from pneumonia, a heart attack, triple bypass usrgery and a stroke, all of which happend withing a two week period in late February. ...

The plan for this afternoon and tomorrow is to get the rest of the side yard cleaned up for ChickenFest parking, and finish the back yard. That consists of putting a few things away, relocating the hose and extension cord and filling some big holes that the dogs made. If I have time I think I will also clean out the main hen house.

I also need to work on an article I am writing for the Dominique Club of America regarding American Dominiques and how egg laying is affected by day length, average temperature and overnight low temperatures. Fun stuff!

As a general rule once they have feathers they really don't need supplemental heat. If you have another day or two before the enclosure is done you can try setting up a kind of play pen for them so they have some time outside each day (make sure it has a top, a piece of hardware cloth or something that will keep them from flying out). Usually the first few nights in the coop they will huddle together in the shavings, but it isn't long before they start roosting at night. They are well insulated and should be fine. Make sure they have a few inches of shavings (or straw or whatever you are using on the floor) to snuggle in.

Ok, after talking it over with my husband we decided we'll have a hook set up for the heat lamp as a permanent thing in the coop in case something happens and they ever need it. Along with that I'll just take them outside into their run for a few days before permanently kicking them out of the house! Hopefully we're able to get the roof on the run completed on Sunday and then I won't have to worry about them getting loose or anything.... I'll need tons of straw for bedding and some sort of 'shade' structure since I can see them wanting to do a lot of huddling/hiding at first....

So my chicks are 5 weeks old today. They look almost fully feathered to me, but I'm not sure if they are or not. The only place I see any 'fuzz' is a bit under their wings and butts, and a few tufts left on the ends of neck feathers. Think they're ok to move out in the coop now? Also, think they're both pullets? Or do u see a roo? They're a Red Star and a Barred Rock.

Pullets and they look like they are ready to go out. I always watch to makesure they look like they arent cold.

X2, and ready for the coop. That last bit of fuzz will disappear quickly. They should have plenty enough feathers to stay warm.
