Namaste, Arin!
Welcome! I think you will find TONS of info on this board! What kinds of chickens do you have? Yes, is beautiful here, and no, I doubt you brought the heat with you!

Namaste to you too!

Holy smoke, there's been a LOT going on here! (On the thread, I mean.) So many posts I wanted to comment on, but I was afraid I wouldn't find where I left off, again. I agree yesterday felt like it was 100 degrees or over. I was NOT believing any thermometer that said otherwise, and neither were my chickens. I gave them frozen melons. Later gave them small tubs of ice water. Sprayed their runs with water a couple of times. Glad I was home. They all looked like they were ready to stroke.

Hubby and I woke up yesterday morning to the sound of water rushing through our kitchen. At first, I thought the dogs had messed with their air cooler (out in the sunroom), but no, a filter under our kitchen sink had cracked. By the time we were up and came downstairs, the kitchen, dining room, living room...well, heck... 3/4 of the main floor was flooded. But wait! That's not all. Water was running down the basement stairs, down the cinder walls in the basement, and dripping off of conduit and beams. The basement had an inch of water standing in some areas (furthest from the drain). All of my empty jars on shelves were FULL of water. Two jars of canned chili were knocked off of a shelf, and I had chili mixed with mason jars to wet-vac.

We worked on the main floor from 7 A.M. until nearly 2 P.M. Pulled out ALL of the flooring and ran the shop vac. Then we worked on the basement until after midnight. We still have work to do.

Plus side? Well, the carpet was old and needed changed.

We had way too much stuff in the basement and needed to purge.

And I REALLY did not want to go to work yesterday.

Very sore today, though, from the up and down the stairs and loading trash in the pickup.

Very sorry for the novel! Thanks for "listening". :)

Troche, Wow, what a day you had! At least it happened during summer, should help dry out the floors quickly. Glad your girls are doing ok in this heat, and you were around to spray cold water their way.

Hope we get a cool down over the next few days! Seems heat is hard on everyone and everything!

yay! I've been on the board's just a few days. yay to finding: Colorado forum :) May 5th 2013 we arrived and June 5th we decided to rent a mobile home in small town Simla...I swear it's Kansas though (lol) windywindy! Anyways for bday my husband built me this for my birthday gift of 4 chicks.

It is completely 100% reused items, down to the nails and the mesh fencing was purchased used from our neighbor for $5. We purchased the chicks, chick feed and a metal feeder plus the mesh. Couldnt have been $40 total :) yay We have: 2 - Easter Eggers EE 1 - Welsummer 1 - Black (I think) Ameracuana We have made a run now too. I open the aka: baby coop door open and they run to me.in the run. I need another coop built, I'm trying to create out of heavy heavy duty pallets...half way complete, because I dont think the baby coop is wide enough for them once they are full size. Total newbie, wanted chickens plus my gardens my whole life. And I try DIY and reducing and reusing everything before purchasing new. We have a 2yo daughter and Boxer boy and we love watching them grow. Currently I'm trying to figure out space and how much I need for a flock of 4-8 chickens (I have the 4 chicks currently), roosts, nesting boxes (got my idea already), and getting a larger.coop built fast so I can add 2 just laying young Rhode Islands :) Blessings, Arin

Welcome! I too am an AZ native. Hubby and I moved to Las Animas in 2006, because this is where he grew up. I have been using all my AZ skills to keep my girls cool and comfortable. Love it here!

Welcome to the thread!

Simla......they have a great girls basketball team.... Grrrrr. Our high school, Hanover, used to play them (My daughter plays) before they moved up to either 2A or 3A, I forget. They would cream our teams.

Awesome! You will have lots of fun.

For adult chickens, it is generally accepted that you should have at least 4 suqre feet of floor space per chicken in the coop, and at least 10 square feet of run space per chicken as well. However, I have never heard a chicken complain about having too much room......
