Colorado

Coco my Cuckoo Marans laid her first egg today! I almost didn't see it in the run because is blended with the mulch. I am surprised she is already laying, even though her comb has been red for a while. She is only 16-17 weeks old. Doesn't that seem young? Hoping her egg color will darken a little more (she is hatchery stock so I don't expect the color to be perfect).

There is a beautiful Buff Orpington roo here in Franktown who needs a good home. According to HOA laws I'm not allowed chooks at all, and am afraid his crowing might give me away. He hatched 3/27 by a broody Ancona so he's a bit skiddish. Please don't let him end up on sombody's dinner table

Please?

If I had room for another male I would take him, I'm in the county with no restrictions, but I don't have any room right now, in fact I have a few males I need to part with myself, sorry Preston. Will keep my fingers crossed for you.

Actually she's starting in the typical window of 16-20 weeks, although I have heard sometimes the Marans can be a bit later to start. Congratulations! Her eggs should get bigger with time, not sure whether they will get darker.

We just added nesting boxes to our coop today. Some of our girls are 17 weeks old and the others are 16 weeks. I don't have any fake eggs or golf balls to put in there, but would egg-sized rocks work?

I don't know, I've never tried that. I would be afraid they would lay eggs next to the rocks and the eggs could break. Maybe a local golfer could help you out with some water balls?

Hi all! New to forum. Jeffco Here. I have 4, 5 month old chix. A RIR, Black SexLink, Australorp, and a Bantam Orloff Sussex mix no Roo but maybe someday. I have also recently added 2 Peking duckies. They are 3 weeks old now and wow are they messy lol. Getting eggcited for my first egg soon as the australorp has started cleaning up the nest box.
My first question to all is what kind of worries should I have about squirrels eating their food and peck treats? Disease/illnesses?
Any rodents are bad. Aside from eating your gals food they are very likely to carry lice, mites, and/or fleas. None of those are fun to deal with. If they are around I would DE the area and the birds as a precaution until you figure out a deterrent.

I've said it before and will say it again. I refuse to eat chickens. They are just too cute. Any suggestions as to what to do with this roo? Judi, you're a sweetheart, thanks for being you.

Ah-ha! Yay joyful noise farm :)
Let us know how wonderful the energy was at the farm and the smell of the feeds ;) I sure hope they offer your flock that extra bit of positives they may need!
They are the closest small local organic farm to us..I intend to take my 24mo DD out there when we are ready for more feed.
Love hearing local small farms being supported.[/

We enjoyed our trip didn't get to stay long it was raining (yeah). But loved seeing the farm and plan on going back soon. Best I can tell the girls seem to like the food.
Really hoping for increased egg production.
I am excited to see what happens. I'm thinking it will take 2-3 weeks to tell?
It is a drive from denver but I like supporting my local farmer!
