Its been a busy couple of days. Went to Louisville CO (near boulder) to attent the funeral of an aunt. Saw lots of cousins that I hadn't seen for several years. Massive rain Saturday evening. Some more yesterday.
Took the week off to get everything done for Beth's party this Saturday. I'm on my way out this morning as soon as the chores are done to Calhan to buy a pig at the auction. Tomorrow is butcher the pig day.....

Wendell-We were in Louisville when the weather rolled in on Saturday. Did you hear the tornado sirens? We were having dinner at The Melting Pot for my son's bday and we were sent to the basement until the sirens shut off. Crazy weather. Sorry to hear about your aunt and it sounds like a busy and fun week coming up with Beth's party.

What are you planning on doing with the extra ones?  I have heard that space and male/female ratio is critical for health. 
I am excited to be able to follow your progress. 

It will be a few weeks before i can yell the males from females, but i am anxious to see the ratio. I have read a 1 to 5 or 6 ratio is best for mating purposes. I am mainly after the eggs so the extra males will be up for grabs or may make a meal. Time will tell. Knowing my kids. The extra males will be up for grabs if someone wants them.
They sure are cute little guys.
I really need to make that plucker i have been threatening to make. Duck hunting is right around the corner also.
A plucker would be very handy.

Froggy, just a thought. The hatcheries have been known to ship the entirely wrong breed out. Given you say the color is wrong, the body type is wrong, and this one doesn't look like any of the others, is it possible it's an entirely different breed?

Started getting some pullet eggs Wednesday, guess some of mine have decided to ignore the mean old broody hen and lay some eggs. I sure wish this broody would give it up. her comb is almost a grayish color after 5 weeks of sitting. But she seems determined to stay on the nest. Altho in the last couple of days she's quick to leave the nest when I call everyone for scratch or garden refuse, which she hadn't been doing before.

After all my complaining tho, I hope she goes broody next year, when I want to get some SS eggs to put under a broody. LOL, I got SS this year cuz I thought they had more of a tendency to go broody. If they do, maybe I'll want some other kind of eggs, not sure I want more than 3 broody hens at a time.

I think you're talking about my post- I am concerned that one of my Black Stars is a cockerel. I know in the scheme of things it's not possible, but she's very different than the other two. I purchased them from an individual rather than a hatchery, so I thinking perhaps there was a chance that perhaps they aren't first gen black sex-links? I'll keep my eye on her and post updates as she gets a bit older.

Hello, hope everyone got some of that good rain yesterday. I finished my latest project today, made a little patio in front of the coop with concrete pavers. It was bare dirt and dead grass before.

What a great little patio. I need to put this on my to-do list.

9 out of 9 hatched! I now have 9 little quail to take care of for a few weeks. Right around 7 weeks till i get eggs from these little ones.

Hey folks, I just discovered that my first turkey raising adventure has taken a strange turn. I thought I was purchasing 4 BBW turkeys, but at 17 weeks, folks on the forum are telling me what I really have are 4 Royal Palm turkeys. These are considered a rare, heritage breed, but I was really hoping for a fine Thanksgiving feast. Anyone out there interested in trading one or more meat turkeys for one or more Royal Palms?

Sorry to hear about the mean hen. She is definately large. My hens do tend to get a better attitude after they start laying. Here is to hoping.

Ha! She looks just like the Buff Orp who has an identical twin who happens to be the rooster we decided too keep. They are pretty. Yesterday was marked on the calendar for new eggs. Yes, they are so big I couldn't fit them in the puppy crate. Any day now.... Here is said guard puppy.
