Colorado

I am having a. Issue with a respitory problem with a few of my chickens. One has a swoolen eye and discharge from the nostril on the same side as well as she is listless and has raspy breathing. I have read some here on BYC and this describes a lot of different diseases. Does anyone have some recomendations?

samsr, I have read of several people having success misting birds with respiratory ailments with an Oxine solution in a fine mist paint sprayer. Have not tried it myself, but fairly sure Coloradogal has. If you can, separate the birds with signs of illness from the rest, and if you decide to treat with antibiotics I might go ahead and treat the whole flock as a precaution. Good luck.

Treating the whole flock at this point is a must as all have been exposed. Only had two last night showing signs and isolated them. This morning two more have it. I will see if i can find some of that medication and get them all misted. I will let you know how it goes. Thanks for the help. This is my first time dealing with something like this.

Big R should have some Duramycin 10 powder you can add to drinking water for a broad spectrum antibiotic, just remember once you initiate treatment you should not consume the eggs laid for about 2 weeks after treatment ends.

The nice thing about the Oxine is it is also a fungistat and can be used for general purpose disinfection as well as misting and treating water. It is pricey (~$25/gallon) but goes a long way. Used together, you should be able to get the upper hand on all but the sickest, and even they may recover. Finger crossed for you.

Pozee, what is the expiration date on the Oxine? Does it even have one? Thinking of buying a gallon, but not sure I would use it all up quick enough.

I have treated their water with duramycin. The two that looked the worst this morning look much better now. This was before I added the duramycin to the water. I could not find Oxine at Bigr. I may have to order some online. Whatever it is starts with watery eyes and the chickens seem to lose sense of balance, then they just want to sit around and they have raspy breathing and some discharge from their nostrils. My roo and one of my RIR were the first affected and they seem to doing to be doing better now other than raspy breathing. It then affected my California white and the australorp this morning. Both are doing much better by this afternoon. Now my aracauna and speckled Sussex seem to have the initial signs of it. I am pretty sure everyone will pull through. From the initial signs to them looking much better seems to take about 12 to 16 hours. Then just the raspy breathing and wanting to sit around. They are still eating and drinking so I assumeing at this point that it is not lethal ,fingers crossed. Thanks for the support. I really appreciate it. Maybe its just a nasty cold. They do have me quite worried though.
