Good luck. So far I have had the best success with clipping the branch and then laying it out on the porchIt usually takes just a few days before they ripen.

Hubby and I just tried to cover everything up. Not sure how cold it'll get tonight, but looks like it's about that time of year to start wrapping things up. Not a very productive year of gardening.

Today I trimmed the top 12 inches off of all of my tomato plants. I know we have another week of warm weather and this will shock the plant and get it to ripen the fruit up faster. Tomorrow I am going to harvest everything left in the garden and start closing it down. I am always so sad to see the end of summer.

turkey question.... when will my turkeys start to sleep in the dog house I have for them? They love sleeping outside in a tree (inside my chicken run). But I wonder at what point will they get cold enough to seek shelter?

Well, that wasn't just a "light" frost last night. Looks like gardening season has come to an end. A lot of work with little return this year. (Things sure were starting to look nice!) I hadn't been able to get home from work early enough this week to do much more than throw plastic over what I could last night. (Give me a moment to feel sorry for myself, here.

Getting a new chicken coop, though. I love the house and run that hubby built, but we never got it painted, and we didn't use hardware cloth on (or under) the run. Mice moved in and we couldn't get them under control. We're buying one already made (the big red one being sold at Big R), and doing the run the right way this time. We're going to put it in a different area, then try to somehow address the issue with the mice in the old run area. Any suggestions are welcome.

The old coop was a bit more conspicuous, too. Aside from the pretty red color of the new one, we're going to try to keep it a bit more under the radar.

Plus, I'll be able to see the chickens when I'm sitting in my living room! BONUS! :)

Well, stay warm and dry. Looks like Autumn has officially arrived.

My guess would be never. If you put the dog house up on something, maybe they will like it better? How about a turkey tree house........
They like to be up high. I don't know if wild turkeys would roost on the ground in the cold. Anyone else have info?

I didn't know the answer, but yours makes perfect sense.

How cold was it up there last night? Here we got to 39.9 degrees overnight. Not as bad as we feared, but we did scurry about unhooking and draining all the hoses last night.

30 and windy! But we still have power so I am not complaining, too much. But I do not feel like going to dig more potatoes in the still fairly wet and now cold dirt. Tomorrow just sounds warmer! LOL!

LOL I totally agree - working outside tomorrow almost always sounds warmer today :)

Think I'm going to stop at the Fairgrounds and peruse the birds on display at the Pikes Peak Poultry Show in a little while. I'm hoping there's a good entry. If anyone else is going, I am mid-50s, long graying hair that will be restrained in some fashion, glasses. Not sure if Bob will be with me, he hasn't decided yet. He thinks I won't spend as much time as I want to if he's there. I think he's secretly afraid he'll enjoy it.

I am in the begining stages of my greenhouse project. I have the hill dug out 7 feet straight in and i dug for the foundation today. I am getting to old for this kind of thing. It is staked out with string. I hope to get the foundation framed out tomorrow.
On another really cool note. I got my first quail egg today. 8 weeks as of today. I really need to get the coop and the runs cleaned out but this greenhouse project is taking most of my time. I hope to build a winter coop that would be attached to the greenhouse when its done. Time will tell. Its time to get a shower and some sleep. Morning time is going to come all too early.
The coop atBigR is pretty nice. Comgrats!!
