They were born august 12. I am asking $25 each. I also have 2 roosters that are the same age. one is a welsummer and the other is a Maran both roosters are free. They are in Elizabeth, CO

So a month ago I noticed his crop looked distended, he was droopy and he held his neck funny. I researched crop stasis here and started treating him with panacur, vitamin b, and steroids. When I spoke to Kristy Pabilonia at CSU, she stated crop stasis is symptomatic of any illness. When he became more neurological, I was ready to euthanize for Mareks and get him tested. I called her to figure out how to package him, and he started eating well. She stated since he was over the juvenile phase, it was more likely leukosis, a disease that causes tumors along the nerve somewhere. There is no prevention, as it is retrovirus carried by wild birds but will cause neurological disease in a single bird, unlike Mareks taking many at the same time. Kinda like feline leukemia!
He returned to normal mostly. He wasn't able to perch but he could walk straight again, and held his wings up again. The RIP pic I posted was what he looked like this past week. The picture attached to this post was a month ago. I was optimistic he may have had a traumatic stroke, that resolved, but the jury is still out. I will submit him to Csu tomorrow and keep you posted on what I learn.

Wow, sounds like you really fought the good fight. I am so sorry it didn't turn out better. I will be very interested in hearing what the necropsy finds. It sounds like so many other things we are confronted with in poultry - all we can do is work toward resistant flocks.

Comparisons in Dominique cockerel development. The bird in the back is a 19-20 week old Dominique cockerel. The one in the front is a 28 week old cockerel. Notice the hackle and tail development in the older bird that takes place in those 8 weeks. Also the comb and wattle development.

The group of current cockerels. The 3rd and 4th from the front will be processed as soon as they get big enough.

samsr, it turns out your folks are about 4 hours the wrong direction from the man in KY who has Speckled Sussex, but thanks for the offer. I will keep looking :) He said if anyone offers I should make sure they know these are adult SS - Big Birds :)

No problem. I wish i could bave helped. It was worth a try. They will be leaving their house on Sunday to head this direction. My wife always looks forward to their visits. Lol

I wish them safe travels and hope it is a pleasant visit - it can be tough having family stay with you in your home, I think, even when you really like them and get along famously. Field trips, a stash of non-controversial movies, and needing pictures of the chickens all might help ...

Any news on your greenhouse project?

Yep, and having a list of chores and tasks to help with really eases the tension. " If you have the energy to fight or whine, then you have the energy to work!" That is my motto from raising 4 boys, well only two have fledged, the last two are still working! LOL! Anyhow, works great on visitors and family.

Hi all! I'm a total newbie here and pre-chicken mama. ;) After years of wanting to own chickens, we've finally bought a lovely home with a backyard to house them in. I'm up in Loveland and although I have many backyard chicken owning friends, lol, none of them are local, so I don't know where to look to buy some baby chicks. I've been on craigslist for a month now, in search of some EE pullets. We would like to raise them from babies and construct a coop ourselves, as I homeschool our three kids and think it would be an awesome learning experience. Does anyone know where I could find a couple? We were thinking of 4-5 to start. Thanks for all your help!
