Colorado

If any of you on the Front Range have to do any more winterising of your coops you may want to get it done in the next 2 days. I was looking at the forecast for Colorado Springs and they're predicting 5°F on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning and -17°F Friday night.

Hi, Im in the Greeley area, east of Evans. I am a new flock owner with a small flock of 4....Looking for more, so If your near and need to rid of some chicks or hens...please let me know...I have ONE laying so far, and hoping the others will start soon. They are about 7 mo old, and one is about 5 mo old...
Im looking for a Broody bc my hens wont sit on the eggs and I want to hatch a few here and there.

Welcome! FYI It is winter so don't fret too much if they start laying later then normal. Egg production will drop when the days get shorter.

Welcome new members! Shy, love the new setup, looks nice - you are right, any precip will collect between the two roofs, I wonder if you could figure out a way to extend the shed roof eave to the peak of the run somehow?

Today we took a few pics, sadly my lack of skills with my camera meant the chick pics didn't turn out at all, but here are a few that did. There are a few of the new pair of Barnevelders I picked up last week that are 4 months old, and a couple of the Silkies and of a pair of Egyptian Fayoumi x Speckled Sussex juveniles, they're about 3 months old.

EF x SS cockerel

EF x SS pullet

Barnevelder pair

Marshmallow, the little cross beaked Silkie

Daddio (cock bird, black), Peep Peep (Porcelain hen in front), Not Peep (the hen behind Peep Peep who looks almost like her but with a darker head), and Daryl (Splash hen)

Pozees and Shy- great photos! When I see silkies that are that cute, I wonder about getting some :)

This weekend we worked on our coops. My girls keep kicking all of the shavings out of their coop when they use the ramps (located in the bottom of the coop) to get in and out. My husband took 3 plastic bins, cut out the bottoms and then mounted them over the hole in the floor of the coop. Then I could really pile the pine shavings up a ton higher without them all ending up on the ground. I will try to take some photos.

Also.. this might seem insane, but with the upcoming cold weather, I begged my hubby to build me a little door in my XL doggie house located in the chicken run. I am going to put my two turkeys to bed on the coldest nights whether they like it or not!!!
:) I gave him the option of the doggie door (for locking them up) or to build me huge stilts to mount the doggie house 5 feet up in the air.

Hello fellow CO people! I have been on BYC for awhile but just found this thread.

With this upcoming weather I added a lamp in the enclosed pen to shine on their water since I don't have a heated waterer and won't be home to change their water multiple times on those days it doesn't get above freezing.

I'm in the process of building an incubator to try and hatch some chicks this spring. If anyone has any silkies (my daughter prefers mixed colors), marans, and bantam EE hatching eggs I'd love to hear from you. :)

So I was out fixing some upper netting Saturday morning, and started pondering.....Not a good thing......LOL

I was on the east side of the main chicken yard, on top of a ladder, and thinking about the money making possibilities of meat turkeys, and what I would need, what additions would have to be made, what would need to be built, the costs, etc. Still thinking about it......... LOL

Well, it turns out the Banevelder pair I got are not Barnevelders LOL. One person suggested they may be Partridge Rocks. They may also be crosses of some sort. They are doing fine with the layer flock, so I guess I'll spend some time looking at pictures of Partridge Rocks to see if that is what they are. Oh well.

Heads up ( from the NWS)

THERE MAY BE SOME MODERATION OVER THE WEEKEND BUT
TEMPERATURES SHOULD STAY WELL BELOW FREEZING. THE NEXT WEEK MAY
BE THE COLDEST WEEK IN THE LAST 15 YEARS.
Oh joy! Can't wait! Time to get the soup on! Plug in the truck and all that.......
