Colorado

Oh no...the storm you had is coming my way. I knew I was going to be punished for bragging about the warm weather.

Are the storms there usually pretty wet? The one we just had wasn't very wet at all, we had some snow but not much, but I know in summer a lot of times the storms pick up moisture as they move East. Main thing we have had is cold, a six day freeze that's been just wickedly cold. The temp here has been hovering between 4 and 5 degrees since 4 am. I am grateful it isn't below zero.

Wendy, Bob said the forecast says we may reach 20 today - he's laughing at himself for the same thing you are doing, saying he can't wait for Wednesday when the high is supposed to be 35 here, and says he never thought he would hear himself wishing for 35 LOL.

My layers have almost all come out of the coop for at least a little while the last two days. I had put straw on top of the dirt in the run, and they seem to like that. The Fayoumis were out briefly a few times yesterday, poor things, they are a desert breed and do NOT like this weather at all. The male has a pretty large comb, but so far it looks like it's okay. Fingers crossed for a warmer day today!

The storms here in Maryland/D.C. are nothing compared to the ones I remember growing up in Colorado. Maryland is basically a big swamp or marsh. When we get a storm, it is freezing rain, sometimes snow. The federal government here shuts down whenever there is about an inch or two of snow.

I am worried about my about my birds. The Hedemora will be fine (they actually seem to like the cold). But the others look miserable.

None of my birds were happy. Our Cream boys have really large comb and wattles, against SOP, and they were practically frozen yesterday. So we built a room in the barn, with walls and a heater. All the birds were much happier by bedtime. Last year the birds did just fine, and I thought I must have messed up if the new birds were having such problems. But then I was at our POA meeting, and they were saying they couldn't remember the last time it was this cold, for this long in December. I am definetly looking forward to warmer temps, even if it is just 35*.

I'm looking forward to the warmer (never thought this Cali girl would be saying 35 was warmer!) weather too. Thursday our weather says 45! That will be wonderful! Our polish are the most miserable. One has icicles hanging off it's crest. She looks the most miserable. I tried to hold those feathers right in front of the light but it didn't help. Another one burned off a lot of her crest by sticking her head between the lamp and the guard. When I first saw her I wondered if the older chickens had crowded her into the light (she's younger than most) but then I was watching them for a minute after refilling their water and saw her stick her head right behind the guard. Stupid chicken! Guess we won't be showing her at National Western! I'll have to see if I can get a pic of it once it warms up. I told DH if this freeze goes on more than one more day we will have to bring the polish inside. If we ever get another freeze that lasts a week like this, I'll bring them in right away. We already have 4 chickens inside right now (watching them for a friend while she is selling her house) so I knew he wouldn't take kindly to the idea of bringing them inside this time.

Well, it is already 10 here so today will be warmer, maybe back up to 16. It actually felt warm at 16 yesterday, scary! I am always clearing snow for the chooks. If they can't see some dirt, then they do not know how deep the snow is and won't try. That is what I have learned from my snow hopping crew up here.

Hope everyone is staying warm! We just had a small snowstorm move through, was moving from west to east, with LOTS of wind and only snow flurries, not sure if it will make to Colorado Springs, but seemed to be heading that way.

I too will be glad once we reach 30 degrees! Chickens are out today, but not my newest ones, they still don;t like the snow, can't blame them. I cleared a path, and packed the snow down, so they all seem to be walking only on it! :p Guess they know the difference!

Hi Everyone!!

We have been in Colorado for almost a year. We are renting in Aurora right now but we are looking in Parker, CO. I was wondering if anyone lives or is knowledgable about Pinery Glen? I would really like to have a couple of chickens, been wanting some for years. We were in the military for 14 years and we are now laying down roots. We were hoping to live in more of the outskirts but because of my husbands jobs and my kids school and activities its just not working out.
Anybody know people in the area? I am pretty sure that technically the HOA doesn't allow chickens but I have heard of some people being successful on having them secretly, lol

I know there are a few here on BYC in Parker, Franktown, and Elizabeth, not sure how close that is to you. Seems as long as people don't complain, there are a few HOA's that are not too strict about people keeping chickens, but not sure about your area. Maybe ask around your neighbors that have been there awhile might know

For those of you looking for chicks, I think Big R gets chicks in March, and a few of the feed stores get them starting in Feb. so not to long to wait!!!!

I don't know anything about Pinery Glen, but finding a home in Parker where you can "legally" have chickens is hard. It's surprising how many restrictions there are. I understand, Parker in general has lifted its restrictions (for the most part), but still there are so many HOA's (even on 5+ acres) that prohibit chickens.
I think Minchi found a house where she can legally keep chickens. I think most of the rest of us are just trying to stay under the radar.
