I think you will get some very cute chicks from both of us! Silkies are adorable. I really need to stop looking at ads, or I will end up with too many chickens.

You will be using an Ecoglow incubator, right? Let me know how well it works. They look nice, and much better than a cheaper table top styro bator I am sure.

No, I made a cooler bator. I'll be using the ecoglow brooder. Can't wait. Seeing everyone's pics makes me want to start now!
Let's see, the stock show is in the last half of Jan right? hmmm....

:/ I really need to keep everyones bator's and brooders straight! lol

That is a lot of eggs! Are these pure Silkie? They are soooo cute, are they from Cat Dance and Shylee lines? Yep, have heard of the oxdine dip and let them air dry, some people use very very weak bleach solution, the key is to let them air dry, don't wipe it off, as that pushs it into the egg, as the egg has pores.
Yes these are pure Silkie, but these are from the group I bought earlier in the year. I've got the first few chicks hatched from Shylee/Catdance in the coop growing up right now, beautiful little Splashes. Both the pullets I got from Shylee are broody right now - sitting on 6 Silkie eggs and 4 Dominique eggs, although the Dom eggs were shipped and the 6 I put in the incubator had detached air cells and no veining, so I guess we'll see if the broodies can get any to hatch. The other 8 are under another broody in the other pen, she's the biggest of all the Silkie hens I have and is doing just great covering these eggs.

Wow, I am surprised to hear you have broodies this time of year! Although some of them think that is all they are here to do, which is not a bad thing, as long as one has enough that are still laying. Oh, and on the Java's, yep, they love to be broody! I think splash and partridge are cool colors for silkies. What is the color difference btween porcelain and white? I know nothing of Silkies, and coloring.

Porcelain looks like dilute buff, there's sometimes a hint of blue. I think I have a pic of my Porcelain hen, Peep Peep.

This is from last summer but she hasn't changed a lot since them - not a great pic but you can see the color.

White is just pure white.

Hey guys, been awhile since I posted, but I've been thinking about getting muscovy, does anyone know if they do fine by themselves with the chickens or is it best to get a pair? Will they be quieter if they are paired? Can't find anything on this information.
Thank you!

Shylee, are you going to the National Western show next month?  I might be interested in the Porcelain male if someone else buys the Partridge pullet with a Splash.  Or the pair.  Hmm.
How do you already know the genders?  We've been trying to guess on Ashdoes' youngsters, they're a bit older than yours.

I am showing at the NWSS in January, hope to see u there! Silkies are tough to sex but there are tell tale characteristics to watch for. Comb development--males have more as along as comparing fairly close in age. Shape of crest--males grow more of a swept back crest while pullets are rounder. Pullets feather in on the body earlier than males. Males tend to have bare back areas while a female has a uniform growth to her body feathers. Noise--not just the obvious crowing but before that males have a deeper voice. Behavior--males play fight and neckflare soooo much more and females quickly show lesser dominance. I look at all these clues to determine gender. The porcelain is about as young as i can be sure of gender. I tried guessing Ashdoes silkies and #4 is female but most others looked male. Tough to tell by pics alone.
Porcelain (or self blue cream as the Silkie club is terming it) is a light straw creamy color with self blue shading. Its not a standard color nor like the porcelain in D'uccles. Theres buff and self blue in the breeding of self blue creams but the color is varied not standardized.

When I was researching them it was advised to pinion them, so they don't fly. I was very close to getting some, but they are considered a "quackless" duck, and I really loved the idea of quacking in the yard. I actually loved having the ducks, except for the mess. They were the messiest things ever, and I just couldn't deal with it.
