Colorado

I just changed bands over the weekend and moved them and their roomies to a growout pen, and so far they look good - not seeing any unwanted color coming through.  They are still young, of course, but so far so good :)  One of these days we'll get some pics, I have been crazy busy and then got sick last week making everything a challenge.  Bob's first cataract surgery is next Monday so we'll try to take pics over the weekend.

I'm glad they're looking good. I know a lot of people that have the same group as us have hatched correctly colored males, so that's what I am hoping for. We started our first Cream hatch last night. The cream girls do not lay well with the cold weather, so 14 in 7 days was as good as it was going to get. We hope by next month, after this first hatch, they get going better. I'm honestly re-thinking the breed all together.
Hope surgery goes well.

Would like to find people who breed serama's and silkie's in Colorado.
Please message me if you breed the above breeds and live in Colorado, or know of people who do. I'm located in Colorado springs, Colorado. I would like to find people who breed show quality birds, verses just pet quality. Thanks, Ivy!

Not sure if you can hatch out eggs or not, but there are 12 Serama eggs on this thread, posted this morning. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/754077/just-in-time-hatching-egg-auction-and-bin-thread/2220

I can't hatch eggs, so I'm looking for started birds. Preferably birds that have been sexed as pullets or hens already. As I cannot have a rooster. I have emailed one serama breeder and two silkie breeders, so hopefully they can help me out. I'm not in a hurry, so I'm willing to wait till the right bird comes along :) Wish me luck ^_^ I just want a little chicken, that I can spoil and take to the local shows! My serama hen Button, passed on awhile ago and I'm just now getting to the point where I could accept a new chicken into my life. Button was a cool chicken, and I will miss her.

I am looking for good quality orpingtons, salmon faverolles and silkies in Colorado. I would prefer to buy chicks - can you recommend 'local' folk who have good quality birds of these breeds? I am in the North Front Range area, but am willing to travel to pick up or if someone ships day olds...

Quite a few people here breed silkies. I have some silkie eggs in the bator from Pozees that are due to hatch in a couple weeks. They'll be for sale (we're in Littleton). I'm pretty sure she also has some chicks due in a couple weeks (she's in the springs).
I'm not sure on the other breeds. Good luck, and post if you find some so others can benefit. :)

I'm so frustrated. Chicks just don't seem to do well in this house! I thought maybe it was our brooder last year but with two new brooders in two different rooms in the house, I can rule that out. We lost another chick this morning (the last weak one from the start) and a seemingly healthy one just became lethargic and won't eat/drink. This is the same thing that happened last year. I treated for cocci last year just in case and it didn't change the outcome.
One brooder has the eco glow, the other has a lamp. The chicks run around like the temp is good, no huddling and no avoiding the lamp/brooder. They have food and clean water (changed multiple times a day with vitamins added). Their brooders are cleaned every couple days.
I can't figure out why we are losing so many. A few I could tell wouldn't make it as soon as we took them out of the box but the one today seemed fine the whole week. Very frustrating. I have tried force feeding them but it doesn't help or maybe it helps them last a day or two extra but it never gets them to improve. I wonder if there is something in the house that any chick with a weakness just can't handle? Problem with that theory is we seem to do fine with the feed store chicks, only lost 1 out of 9 of those compared to 8 out of 25 of the shipped chicks.

The feed store chicks were shipped, too, but probably from a different place. I don't see anything in your description that makes me think it's you or your house, it could be the time of year, the difference in climate or elevation from the shipper's place to you, age or vigor of the parent birds, or something else altogether. I'm sorry you've lost so many, it's very frustrating. Keep up the good work, it sounds as if you are giving very good care. Which starter are you using? You might try adding chick grit, which is just regular grit sifted so they get only the small particles, maybe some plain yogurt for probiotics, scrambled egg for extra protein, to support them a little.
