I got my chicks today. Only one DOA. It wasn't as traumatic as I thought it would be, to open a box with a dead chick. The rest (20) are doing great!!
Super cute, eating and drinking and running around like nuts. I couldn't believe how fast they took to eating and drinking. I've never raised chicks before. I've always had broody's do it for me. They aren't even close to this active with a broody at three days old.
I'm around Colorado Springs also and mine are suppose to arrive around the 9th here. Hope they all make it (9 Cochin, 8 Bronze Breasted Turkeys). Have 15 more in the incubator Sumatra x Jersey Giants hoping for mainly female but will have to give up some either way as my wife is picking up some Ducks today. How did you get them to eat and drink? or just push their beak in it or do they figure it out?

With chicks, you should dip their beaks into the water once or twice to ensure they get a drink, and they normally don't need any more help than that. Turkeys should learn from the chicks, alone they can actually starve to death because they don't know how to eat without chicken "tutors" - at least this is what I am told, I've only ever had poults once for a few days and they were with chicks so I didn't have any problems.

Thanks for the information. Should I make some roost for the little guys to start them right as I have some birds that refuse to roost?

That's what I did.
I work on a pig farm and we call that 'hey, what are you guys doing'? mentality. When one pig does something the rest say, 'hey, what are you guys doing' and then they do it too.
The chicks did that too with drinking, then eating.

I have some 4 week olds you can have. I am also hatching some more this weekend that will need to go. Its an incubation addiction with the new home made incubator. Lol
Wendle has first dibs on the chicks since they were his eggs however. I dont think he will take them all. Let me know. I am in the springs though.
