Colorado

Jax just 8 blocks from me will add to their order for individual needs. Not so happy with the ones I have gotten from them though. Not a single good layer in the bunch.
Funny you say that. I have 2 cuckoo marans that came from Jax (my niece's Easter chicks a few years ago). Cackle birds I think. They both lay the wimpiest light brown eggs and go broody at least 3 times a summer. Makes me want to never have one again.

I've raised about 150 chicks from FS. I've had 8 turn out to be roosters and only one not the breed I bought. (white cochin instead of light brahma. Easy enough mistake if they fall out of the brooder).

FS?

I was told the Jax by me uses welp hatchery. No shipping charge and all that.

Thinking and thinking this replacement batch through and DH and I talking about it we want them vaccinated. Ordering them seems the only way for us to get ones that have been vaccinated.
Just really hate having them in the mail and possibly losing some in transit.

Side note... Yesterday I built a new nest box set for the ladies. Kinda proud of it.
I will take pics once I get it in place in the new coop.
I am hoping the slant on the roof is enough to keep them from trying to roost on it.

I have ordered twice from Meyers and twice from McMurry. I only had one DOA, it was a Meyers bird. I did have several roosters and I paid a lot for sexed pullets. I have a credit now, big deal right? I wanted pullets not a $30 credit.
I have had Norther Colorado Feeders Supply order chicks for me. I forgot where they order from. I think I would order from them if I order more birds. They take back any roosters if you buy pullets, so for me. That is worth the drive to Fort Collins.

DoubleKindness, sorry you are having such a hard time. I hope things are turning around for you.

we had one causality out of 28 birds via mail from Meyer.

DK - how are things going any ideas on what is making your birds sick?

The peeps are doing well though I'm concerned for the light colored one.

I asked the store clerk at Big R if I could go in and pick out the chicks I wanted, she told me the public is not allowed to handle the chicks anymore, they ended up with to many fatalities and seems people would put the roosters and SR in with the pullets. I know years ago at Big R there were kids there running from pen to pen picking them up, putting them down, then picking up another, made no sense why they had to pick up every chick. **** brats! LOL

I would buy from Kiowa or Elizabeth feed, all the chicks I have purchased there have been pullets. never have had a rooster yet! Probably will jinx myself by saying this........

Cold wind blowing here today, I thought is was supposed to be in the 50's, but sure doesn't feel that warm right now. Putting on some spiced wine on the stove, just feels like that kind of day!!!!

Of the two peeps shown above, the darker one is doing great and is very active. The lighter one is bigger and has feathered out so quickly but seems lethargic or as if something might be wrong with it...could it be that she is growing really quickly? She's half orp and half light brahma, both big birds! So is it just her growing quickly that makes her sleepy? When mama scratches for food and calls them she comes to life and runs to mom but otherwise she just sort of stands around. When my brahmas were growing up their wings hung low I think because they were in an awkward stage and their wings weren't developed enough to hold their own weight yet. That may be what's going on here too...I dunno...a little concerned.
