[Percheron chick]

The chickens that I really want are 'super blue egg layers'. I love mutts and I used to have 5 super blue egg layers. They were a leghorn and EE X. THey laid beautiful sky blue eggs, and lots of them. They were small birds and really pretty.
Does anyone have any or know of any close by?

If my leghorn ever starts back up, I will have eggs. I have both a blue Araucana and blue wheaten Ameraucana rooster. I also wanted to try hatching some brabanter EEs if they ever get with the program as well.

I sent in an order to Sand Hills Preservation back in December. Hoping for some Icelandics, LF Cochins, Marraduna Basques (Euskal Oiloa)and Buckeyes and whatever they send for a total of 50 chicks. We will see if they have to substitute for the Basques, in which case I asked for some Wyandottes.

I've been considering seeing if anyone wanted to split an order to sand hill. Good thing you didn't advertise it. I'm wanting more Brabanters and maybe some Chanteclers but I'm trying to be strong.

You guys are killing me. I just broke down and ordered some bantam barred rocks and bantam EE. They don't come until the end of April, so I'll have plenty of time to add to the order in a weak moment.

Well, I got some bad news in regards to my trauma recovery and it looks like I won't be able to make any additions to my little flock any time soon.

It turns out that I might not have suffered a mild concussion but that I suffered moderate brain trauma in my car accident. What that means for me is that I've been prolonging my recovery by trying to function at a level not compatible with where my brain is at right now. I'm going to have to cut back to half-time at work and that means a cut to half my pay. I'm really disappointed about this, beyond the obvious reasons of a lot of the after effects of the trauma having a high chance of being permanent, but also because I don't know if I'll even be able to afford the 8 chicks I ordered in November or even trying to hatch any of my hens eggs.

Super disappointed right now, but I'm totally going to live vicariously through everyone else bringing in new flock additions and doing hatchings.

I'm sorry to hear that. The brain is an amazing thing though. Take it easy and give it time to heal properly so you give it the best chance of figuring out how to work within the new constraints.

I wanted Brabanters but ended up substituting spitzhaubens instead because I couldn't find a hatchery that had everything I wanted.

In this case, only the weak have fun!
I split an order with a neighbor, so if there are blizzard issues or power outages, we can cooperate with heating chicks off the grid.

So many chicken breeds, so little time!

Understand about the brain injury, my youngest daughter suffered head trauma after a horrific car accident when a 16 year old who had been driving for three weeks knocked her car off the road and it hit a tree. You will get there, it just takes time. Also, you can offset your feed by hatching out some extra laying hens, and selling their eggs or even selling their chicks. You could also advertise to hatch others hatching eggs, and make a little extra that way too.

Don;t want to jinx my egg laying, but had two eggs yesterday! Yay!

@ DK - did you rectify your mouse situation? We have are getting more and more, we are out in a very rural spot and next to an open field. I completely cleaned out the coops, nest boxes and run yesterday and added new straw to their run and nest boxes and PDZ & DE (to coops). While cleaning the run found a feed bowl upside down and when I dug it up there was a nest of a mom and baby mice. They didn't stand a chance against our mousers, our best mousers are the BR and the Delaware. Anyway, needing a natural remedy to deter the mouse population. I wouldn't mind a barn cat, that we could let into the run and chickens area at night. It would strictly have to be an outside cat as my boyfriend is allergic. We have plenty of out building on the property where we could make a nice sheltered spot out of the element for it. One drawback to that is we have a pretty active coon and coyote population up here. I am pulling their food at night out of the run and we don't have any in the coop. We will be making gravity PVC feeders for the run that we can just cover at night.

Anyone else have suggestions?

I don't have anything to add except I sympathize. I cleaned out the coop the other day and found trails through the bottom of the shavings. Then last night I checked the camera and saw a mouse run across the floor and jump out the open window. I am going to look to see if I can find a way to hang their food somehow to get it out of the way. We have a barn cat but I'd have to go catch him and throw him into the chicken run area at night because they are in a secure area he can't get into. I've thought about locking him in there but he wouldn't be able to get to shelter there.

I'll be watching to see what others offer.

Yay! I I would love to get some of those eggs from you...are you happy with the leghorns? Were they molting?

I only have one LB leghorn. She's a good layer (6 a week) and finished molting at least 2 weeks ago but hasn't started back up. All of mine seem to be on the slow side this year starting back up. I don't do extra light and have had a few "incidences" recently. The only one I consistently see in the nesting box is my BR. I haven't checked for fertility yet but not worried about it.
