Thanks for checking in Euarto. How do the Bresse taste? Are they that much better than Cornish X or Freedom Rangers?
DK, do you think the taste is worth the $$ and trouble of raising the Bresse?

maggiemo, I haven't eaten one yet. I bought chicks last year, and raised them up for breeding. I am still waiting for my first hatchlings to get to finishing size. While I don't have any personal experience yet, I've never read of a person who has raised Bresse who claims they raised another meat bird that they thought tasted better.

I did try Bresse I used to have them and now I am gonna start again.
I think what make the bresse taste and texture special is the way they are fed the last week before they go to camp.
I did something similar with my bresse, biellefelders, sulmtalers and marradunas and to me all taste the same the texture was the same as well the only difference was some have more breast than others some more drumstick and some bait more muscle than others.
My bresse did not eat lots more than other breeds,but all my birds free range as well so I can not say for sure.

It looks like the geese that i hatched last spring are indeed female. I have one tifted an one toulouse females. I am now in search of a male (gander) for them to mate with. If anyone knows of one. Let me know.

Cool! Should be fairly easy to find an extra gander. You might try a wanted to buy on your local CL.

My hen turned roo update. He's looking quite pretty and has a great temperament still. No crowing yet thank goodness though my neighbor is disappointed he hasn't started yet.

Cool!  Should be fairly easy to find an extra gander.  You might try a wanted to buy on your local CL.
Finding a gander has been a little of a headache. I did finally locate a toulouse gander in ordway. I also picke up two females for my neighbor.
The woman i picked them up from was very nice. She has critters running around all over the place. Lots of geese turkey chickens and goats. She told me that i need more. Just let her know.
I should have some fertle goose hatching eggs soon. I will have full blooded toulouse and the other will be half tufted and toulouse. Goose eggs are a whole different hatching experience. I found that out last spring. If anyone wants to try. Just let me know.

Good morning Colorado,

Thought I would report on my horizontal nipple waterer project. Got my horizontal nipple waterers built and put them in the run. I put one in the run yesterday around 4:30. Took about 2 minutes until some of the girls figured out how to use it. I put the second one in the run this am before letting everyone out, pulled their other waterers and let them out. They took to it like it had ways been there. The BR and Delawares have been the ones to take the lead and have shown others. I still need to secure them against some support poles in the run and put the bucket heaters in them as well, which I will do today. Next task is building the no waste bucket style feeders and get them set up, I will be building them out of a 15 gallon plastic drum and a five gallon bucket. Surgery is a week from tomorrow and I have been trying to get things organized, meals made, chickens streamlined, etc. I am glad our girls took to the waterers so easily, wasn't sure they would since we have never used nipple waterers before. Also I bought 15 nipples not realizing that one nipple waterers 6-8 birds and I have only used 9, so will have plenty to set up waterers for baby chicks this spring and to have a bucket in their free range area as well.
