I had to buy eggs too. Made me understand that I NEED a multi generational flock.
I toughed it out through the holidays and did not get to bake ANYTHING. It was a real downer.
I got my order confirmation from Cackle today. I am getting 6 BA, 6 Welsummers and 3 Dark Brahama. I plan to sell the Welsummers and keep the rest. It will put my coop at its max unless I cull out some non layers. ( I am culling them out for sure ) DH hates the idea but also likes a nice fried chicken so there it is he has to accept it.
Mine have begun laying again and I am getting about 3 to 4 eggs a day out of 19 hens. Not a good average.

Glad you got your order in! Welsummers should be easy to sell, as they lay a beautiful egg! You may be tempted to keep a few because of their egg color........ Yep, nothing better than home grown chicken dinner! I have yet to process one, but we hope to this coming year.

I am just hoping they do not put a huge amount of packing peanuts in the order.
I know what you mean about being tempted to keep a couple of the Wellies. I put them on the order to meet the order requirement knowing I should be able to sell them pretty easily. It was so tempting to get the surprise package but what on earth would I do with a bunch of roos. I am in the middle of town and any crowing would result in cranky neighbor being even more cranky.

Does Cackle use roosters as packing peanuts? I know some other hatcheries do, but was not sure about Cackle. I think you chose well, 15 roosters in town is never a good thing! When is your order due to arrive? You could always grow out those roosters and process them...... summer is an easier time to grow them out, as they can free range some.

On another note, I am starting to get some Marans eggs!!!

Beautiful! I hope our maran lays as pretty. I forgot she is also of laying age but the new egg is a real light creamy color, hopefully not my bcm! lol

I didn't read anywhere that cackle adds packing peanuts. You should've just tagged on to my order so you wouldn't have to worry about the minimum. I just added splash silkies to my order so I can hopefully get a hen to breed to my roos. I think I'll be adding some welsh harlequins too.
