Sad news: the little one that hatched this morning seems to be dying right now. I found it unresponsive under the EcoGlow about an hour ago & it's breathing has slowed almost to a stop now. Actually, I think it did just stop breathing as I was typing this. Did I do the wrong thing by moving it to the brooder with the other two? It's belly is kind of distended & a bit of umbilical cord is still attached. I'm just so sad that the little guy worked so hard to get out & only lived a handful of hours.

So sorry. I am sure you did not do anything wrong. Sometimes the little ones don't make it, especially the ones that hatch later. I think they are just weaker. You still did great. Love those two littles that you have.

Uzi, you did just fine. This is the part that you don't see when you go to the stores and get chicks that are all fluffy and running around. You gave that chick a chance and it naturally was not strong enough to survive. Not your fault and that is why the hens set on so many eggs to begin with. Hugs to you and enjoy the other little ones.

Mountain Mom did meat birds last year in ft collins :) I process my own birds (roos only so far and drakes) and I admit, I need a plucker. It's on the short list.

Most common meat birds are cx or rangers. I raise white bresse, which are more of a fancy meat breed taking longer to mature.

I'm doing meat birds for the first time this year and am trying to pick which variety to try. I'm curious why you picked the white bresse variety. I'm not familiar with it.

Also, has anyone seen the email from murray mcmurray about their new meat bird, chef choice or something like that?

Oh darn, so sorry to hear about that, I am sure he/she just wasn't strong enough. Still you did a great job with your hatch. :hugs keep your head up, shoot 6 months ago you didn't even have a flock, much less new babies you just hatched, how cool is that?!

Sadly losing chicks is part of raising them..... not anything you did, may have had a defect or just worked to hard to get out, hard to say exactly.

Hmmm, had not heard of the McMurry newest breed of meat bird??? At our altitude here, the Cornish don't do well. The Red Rangers, and Cornish cross do better here in Colorado, as they don't grow as quickly, and have less leg issues.

Seriously???? It is snowing here! Springtime in the Rockies, gotta love it!!!!

ugh, you guys...I was supposed to get my chicks today by noon via USPS Express Mail. I hadn't heard anything so I went to the post office and, long story short...they don't know where the package is.

I was on the phone with 'delivery retrieval'  and they said they would try to get back with me by tonight or tomorrow morning.

I had bantams in that shipment. :(

Maggie - any word on your eggs?

they are officially 'lost'. Poor things...I won't ever order chicks again after this.
I paid for 1 day Express Delivery and just found out they don't guarantee delivery of live animals with the 1 day express.
It's going to be another long day waiting, probably for a box of dead birds.

That's terrible! Poor little things. It's amazing, I never have packages lost in the mail, yet am always hearing about chicks disappearing. What the heck?
